Fourtrak Diesel Tank Removal

Forum:

When I let the fuel run low the filter gets filled up with rubbish. I doubt the tank has been off in 20 years. Has anyone got any tips for removing and cleaning the tank? Can you drop the tank down before removing the pipes/electrics? How do the electrics disconnect, is there a plug? The metal fuel pipes are quite rusty up by the shock mount where they vanish from sight and so I don't want to break anything off.

Cheers, Ben.

Why remove the tank, just

Why remove the tank, just ensure yours has a drain bung on the bottom, you can simply remove this and drain it.

If you access the top through the removal of the filler pipe flexible hose you can clean it through here. I generally use a jet wash through the filler neck after a spraying of degreaser into the tank with the drain bung reinstated. Once the cleaning water is drained i use a 500W halogen light close to the bottom of the tank to dry it out before use.

leave alone if you can stal

if its not essential to remove it from your truck stal dont touch, reason is mate i can most likely gaurentee that youll shear of most of the bolts that hold on the tank, probably find the filler pipe very coroded and will want replacing, also the rubber pipes will split but worst problem youll come across is you will probably make holes in the tank, where the tank hangs is a poxy little mud trap and causes tank corossion, but in itself is a very easy job to remove theres only a few bolts holding it to the chassis on the rails, most pipes you can get to wiggle of as you let it down easy but DONT let the tank drop as ut kinks the main filler, to aid getting to this open the fuel filler cap, pull back rubber and undo the screws these will most likely want drilling out due to rust, but the rest of the job is straight forward, on top of the tank is the two sender wires these just pull of, remember to take them off before letting the tank right to the ground, good thing is the tank isnt heavy, any other questions just ask.

Ah right. Thank you both, I'll try to clean it out with it in situ then. Don't want to mess about with rusty/snaping bolts/screws unless I have to.

Cheers.
