Ive got a 1993 Fourtrak,
When i first start up it smokes for 20-30 seconds and runs really rough, but it passes and then ticks over fine with no smoke.
Im doing a service on it next week and ill change all the filters, just wondering if its the fuel filter or something like that.
Also it only does it when its been sitting for a while, if its warmish it starts fine.

Glow plug.
A glow plug is not working. One cylinder is not firing.
Is it black sooty smoke, or
Is it black sooty smoke, or blue oily smoke, if it is the former and slightly more difficult to start then suspect glow plugs.
If it is the latter then look to worn valve stem oil seals as blue smoke is oil burning, black smoke is excess diesel.

Water.
Same comment as assassin. White is water vapour. Check the coolant reservoir - has it gone 'down'? Also remove when cold, the radiator cap and check if the radiator is full. A full coolant reservoir does not guarentee a full radiator especially if there if leakage at the cylinger head.
Also check if there are any small bubbles rising into the coolant reservoir when the engine is hot with engine revs high. Bubbles indicate a leaking head gasket or cracked cylinder head.

This sounds more like water, are you losing water or do you only use the vehicle periodically.
If you are losing water then it is usually the head gasket, sometimes it may be a cracked block or cylinder but this is virtually unknown.
If you only use the vehicle periodically it will be damp air forming condensation in the engine from standing. As the vehicle is started it warms the engine and its oil and dries it out and evaporates the oil through the exhaust.
If you only make short journeys periodically you get similar symptoms as the engine never gets hot enough to dry itself and its oil out.
ive only had the car a week
ive only had the car a week so far, but ive managed 200 miles so far. ill have a check on the water level, but the smoke really seems to smell like diesel, but its white.
Ill change the plugs and filters tonight and check the water level.
