2002 YRV 1.3 - Whirring sound when driving.

Forum:

Hello everyone!

First post here, hate to be joining with a problem, but just got my first car recently (2002 Daihatsu YRV radical 2), and it has started making odd noises!

When driving (over apx 20mph i.e. mainly 3rd gear Smile I get a loud whirring sound that increases in tempo and loudness as speed increases. It's louder when accelerating, and disappears/gets very quiet if I push the clutch in. I'm not overly familiar with cars and have been trying to search for other people with similar issues online, but no luck. It's hard to judge where the sound is actually coming from in the car, as it has to be moving to hear it. I could try making a recording if that would help. Last couple of times I have also heard a slight squeal alongside this, though I don't know if it is the same issue. The car has 70k miles on it, but apart from that seems in very good condition.

Thanks for your help.

Whirring sound

Could be many things.

When you push the clutch pedal and are coasting, the whirring reduces as the engine revs drop. That suggests the noise is engine related.

Someone on the forum recently had a water pump bearing problem. The water pump impeller blades would make a whirring noise as they hit the pump casing. As a start check if you can detect any sideways play in the bearing of anything driven by the 'serpentine' belt, of which one is the water pump.

It always helps if you know that water and engine and transmission oils are clean and at the right level.

After re-reading this post I

After re-reading this post I assume you mean as the ROAD SPEED increases the noise speeds up? If so it is transmission/drive train related. If it increases with revs then it's engine related. If, as YRV Tony says, the noise decreases with the revs when pushing the clutch in then it's likely to be engine related.

But - as you say its mainly in 3rd gear and is louder under acceleration and is quieter when you push the clutch in, then I think it's the gearbox/drivetrain.
As already mentioned, check that the levels are OK, especially in this case the gearbox oil. If it was the brakes/wheel bearing or something then it would do it all the time regardless of gear/clutch in or out etc.

I hope you get it sorted out. Do keep us posted.
