Fed up with 4wd questions! read this for answers

Forum:

Right 4wd on a fourtrak Does Not mean all 4 wheels turn, power always turns the easiest wheel on any axle/independant set up, they Do Not have difflock in the diff housing unless your lucky and have a foreign one!

the set up of 4wd is thus - Engine, to main gearbox, to transfer gearbox, to two propshafts, one goes forward one goes rearward, they connect to - differentials, which turn two half shafts (driveshafts) on the 'axle' , which connect to the wheels (basically)

what is hubs??
Manual hubs
Auto hubs
permanent locked hubs

these connect half shafts to the wheels (basically)

manuals : lock in to use 4wd or can be driven in locked in 2wd but spins components an uses more fuel.

auto: when 4wd is selected and halfshafts start turning the auto locking mechanism (nothing electrical ) grabs and starts turning tyres.

permanent: as it says nothing to select, everything is always spinning, also nothing to go wrong.

Different ways of selecting 4wd:
2h (2wd on rear wheels only)
4h ( 4wd, both propshafts turning, same gearbox speed range as 2wd )
4L ( 4wd with a lower ratio of gearing from the transfer box, makes the wheels turn slower even when revved)

some 4wd selecting choices:
on a lever sometimes 2h 4h n 4L
n meaning neutral, the rest self explanatory

on a dashboard you might see 4h but have a lever too that says 2h 4L,
this means 4wd will work in 4L via the lever or if you want 4h gearing, leave in the 2h position and push the 4h button, this activates a solonoid on the transfer gearbox to 'kick' in 4h

every vehicle has a 4wd light, which activates in whatever 4wd mode
Deactivating 4wd: sometimes when returning to 2wd you may need to reverse a couple of meters to make sure its 'knocked out' ,
push down on cluth to use levers helps too.

this is the basics, as there are soo many repeated silly questions on 4wd i thought i would write it, but you can find it in the handbook of your vehicle anyway.

You tell em!!

nah you will pass no worries! may take you up on the bures offer its just a busy time for us family men!

you want to see some of the

you want to see some of the utter crap thats been written on some landrover forums... the coil sprung landies are permenant 4wd with a third diff in the transfer box.... most have a diff lock position on the hilo stick... which only works on the centre diff.... been a lot of utter garbage posted in the numerous "my wheels spinning is my landie broke" threads

4WD

Bet most user's never need 4WD anyway and only use them for school runs, Towing trailers or horseboxes like most Range Rovers, Landrovers e.t.c
Fourtraks are made for off-Road that's why Farmers loved them, Why people buy them for road use only baffles me,
New 4x4 vehicles are more a Status icon and not what they where intended for, Why buy 4x4 if you don't need it.

I own a Fourtrak TDX and 2 Sirion 1.3 Auto's Mk 2 and love them as there so reliable and my Fourtrak is M Reg and 20 Years old and still goes great, Soon be a Classic.

Holy Thread resurrection Batman!

Wow this thread went dead 6 years ago! Nicely resurrected! Smile
