Noobie hello and a clickety clack ....... no 4wd!

Forum:

Hello.

Im new to the forum so please be gentle.

I have just purchaced a 1990 fourtrak 2ltr about 2 months ago and all is well. Kindof.......
Its a question about the 4wd if anyone would be able to help.

2WD is fine. When stationery i press the 4WD button on the dash and here a relay click under the dash. The 4WD light on the clock doesnt come on. Long story short its snoing here now so i needed the 4wd today. Pressed the button as mentioned befor and tried to see if the 4wd was working. I found a nice icy patch and floored it but only the back 2 spin. If I am moving slowly and push the button you can hear a loud clicking coming from the gearbox/drive train so It is definatley working, but no drive. I also locked the hubs and NO drive. I tried 4L but you guessed it No drive to the front....

Any ideas or am I doing something wrong?

Many thanks in advance to any replies

Regards

Hi and thank you. That eally

Hi and thank you.

That eally helped but I have just one more question if you dont mind.

So as I understand it, i leave it in 2H on the stick, press the 4WD button on the dash and get out and lock the hubs. Would that make it 4WS then?

Also Ive heard of this thing called wind up. Can these vehicles get it from wrongly setting the 4wd H/L ranges on a NON slippy surface?

Thanks again for your reply.....

non slippy surfaces

the fourtrak is fitted with a 50/50 transfer box, same power to front axle as rear, land rovers for example have permanent 4wd, but have something in the transfer box called a differential, this allows power to always travel to the easiest front or rear prop shaft, when a landy owner says ' i have difflock nah nah ' it means they can lock the front and rear propshafts with equal power the same as a fourtrak already, the windup is caused by both props and all tyres gripping well and scrubbing together with no give in any of the mechanics, if you read the handbook it will suggest to not use 4wd on tarmac and solid surfaces, short distances wont hurt too much, but is unnecessary anyway, this is the difference of a landy gearbox and a fourtrak gearbox, the fourtrak is always designed for just 2wd until your in slippy conditions.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
