Delayed starting - Air entering fuel system around pump, but where?

Forum:

Hi All,
Starting problems on my F78, killed the battery a few times due to time spent cranking. Have been curing it for a while by using the priming pump (after which it starts almost instantly), although I have noticed recently that the fuel is draining back much more quickly, i.e. air entering somewhere. First I assumed the pipes (although I recently replaced these with rubber), checked everything, no leaks.
Had a look around the fuel pump, and after I work the priming pump I can just about hear air being drawn in somewhere around the IP. Changed the rubber pipes leading to/from the pump, but the noise is still there.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Once started it runs absolutely fine. I'm about to go on a 600 mile trip, I'm hoping it won't get any worse!
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Lube

I had this on a 94 fourtrak

I had this on a 94 fourtrak independent it was a cracked fuel line above the rear axle you could just see a damp patch on the pipe. Changed the front to rear for a new copper one and sorted

Thanks for your reply. I

Thanks for your reply. I actually had the same problem on this car a couple of years back, damp patch in exactly the same place. So I replaced both the feed and return lines with rubber, and I have checked them.

This is definitely air being drawn in somewhere around the bonnet. When I work the priming pump I can hear the very faint squeak of air entering the fuel system for a few seconds after I stop priming. When I then start priming again the pump feels soft (i.e. fuel has drained back to tank).

Any other ideas on where the leak might be or how to pinpoint it?

Cheers.
