Forum:
Somebody told me that it was not a good idea to jump start a modern car these days fitted with an ECU? Is this correct?
My wife suffered a flat battery yesterday and was eventually bump started by a passerby fortunately. She was driving a 2003 plated Daihatsu Charade.
Get's used for short trips to the shops and that is all these days. Parked up with the lights on in daylight and CD running!!

Jump starting isn't ideal in
Jump starting isn't ideal in any situation really, and yes, modern vehicles with ecu's are more sensitive to voltage spikes/surges etc, but I've never heard of a vehicle being damaged by jump starting. I've jump started and been jump started countless times any never had a problem. You should not BUMP start modern cars, for the risk of unburnt fuel damaging the catalytic converter. Again I've done this too, but only in an emergency. I wouldn't worry, just tell her not to do it again...........;-)

Jump is OK.
Jump start from a donor battery is exactly the same as using the vehicle's own battery. Always remember to connect the earth lead direct to your engine's block and not direct to your battery earth terminal. The positive connects to each battery - connect the positives first.
Bump start ........ no no no!
Re: Jump is okay
Is'nt it amazing the differences in opinion you get yesterday a friend told me not to put the negative lead on the engine block!! just connect pos to pos and neg to neg.

Most manuals tell you to use
Most manuals tell you to use the block but I tried it on a dead car the other week and it didn't work as well as using the neg term.
