Oh boy I guess the turbos gone bang.....

Forum:

The wifes just come back from a hundred mile run with the 2.8td fourtrak.
Its blowing out white smoke from the exhaust severely even on tickover and on rubbing my finger around the inside of the exhaust its coked up with wet oil like soot.
Had a quick butchers under the hood and everything looks in order with no leaks so i guess the turbos blown.
Wouldnt mind a second opinion though just in case im barking up the wrong tree!
Anyone got a second hand one up for grabs? If not whats my best option and whos best to source one from and what price?
Sorry to be a pain guys but its the first time ive ever come up with a problem like this and im lost.(only used to motorcycle engines)

Sounds like the head gasket t

Sounds like the head gasket to me m8..not the turbo.
White smoke is water gettin in to the lump where it should'nt.
Any loss of coolent in the rad Unknw
Is the heater working as it should Unknw
If it does turn out to be the head gasket (not uncommon...but fairly rare)get it done quickly...dont run your trak with a blown head..or you could warp the head itself.
Not a huge job on a track...

As I say if it does turn out to be the head gasket you will be well advised to get the head skimmed when its off...about £25-35 ...any decent small engineering shop will do it for you.

Funny you should say that! H

Funny you should say that!
Had the same thought myself and just been and had a look and it took 3 litres of water!
So yeah its looks like it is the head gasket.
Least im not panicking like i was thinking big money!Funny though a she said she kept her eye on the temp gauge and it didnt increase off the normal half way mark! Also when i had the motor running and trying to diagnose it it never moved off half either!
So you dont reckon its a massive job then doing a head gasket on one?

head

Keep your fingers crossed that its only a blown gasket. You might have blown a hole through the cylinder head and thats terminal. A new head is rather expensive.
If its just the gasket get the head skimmed before its re-fitted or you could be wasting your time.

Well correct diagonosis given

Well correct diagonosis given by you guys thanks..

Unfortunatly i removed the head last night and the gasket had gone.
Unfortunatly its more terminal as there are crack between the valves! They may have been there for some while but i dont want to risk putting the head back on in its current state.

If anyone knows of a 2.8 td head im desperatly seeking for one.

Yup ..thought it sounded like

Yup ..thought it sounded like the head m8.....if you can't source a head locally try phoning Graham Dewhurst...his contact details are under 'parts dealers' at the top of the page..he should be able to sort you out ... I see basket cases for sale for repair or parts all the time on ebay too....might be the way to go if one comes up.

2.8TD Head

Wisecobandit,

The cracks between the valves are quite common on the 2.8TD head.

I would suggest having it pressure tested before you go spending loads of cash. It should cost about £20-30.

However, if all else fails I have a head from a 1990 2.8TD.
I stripped it off a engine that had a cracked block, the previous owner had replaced the head gasket and over tighten the rear bolts.

I brought the truck cheap and droped a new lump in it. This head also has hair line cracks between the valves, but it would not stop me from fitting it.

Hope his helps,

also, if you need a service manual or just the relevent pages I can send you one.

Im going to stick the head ba

Im going to stick the head back on at present and see if it runs ok.The cracks between the valves appear to be old and not fresh so hopefully that will keep it on the off road temporarily.
Cheapest breaker with a head quoted £275 ranging up to £400!I dont really want to g this route as none are local and sods law says when it turns up it to will have cracks!
I will keep my eye out for one locally,im sure i can either get a complete motor or even vehicle for a few hundred quid more then i will have some extra spares aswell........

Oh and thanks for the offer H let me see if anything comes up at a decent price locally mate

Head

For £300-400 there is a very good change you can get hold of a complete engine and gear box,

I got an engine and gearbox from www.adtrader.co.uk, from a 1989 TD for £250.

It dropped straight in, ran like a dream. very happy.

No its not too bad a job at a

No its not too bad a job at all...but you will probably need a manual to give you the sequence for untightening the head bolts..they must come off and go back on in the correct sequence m8.
You must also torque all bolts to correct specs..if you aint got a manual..get one for a fiver on ebay...search for Daihatsu..there's loads of peeps selling them.

Even if the head gasket has gone it does not mean you will have a rise in temperature...only when ALL or most of the coolent has disappeared...so temp reading is not really that helpful when diagnosing a blown head.

I am almost certain the heads blown m8...white smoke and wet soot at the exhaust all point to it. Get a second opinion from yer local friendly garage...dont let em do the work though..unless they give you a really good price.
