Mine is already 32 years old this year, and to date i have had no problems since she was fully rebuilt. While doing this work it was nothing more than careful preperation and prevention which will preserve her.
It is not difficult to strip these vehicles and protect the metalwork on the underside and chassis which is the most vulnerable. It is not hard to clean internal cavities such as sills, then drill and plug them for access, and most mechanical bits are available.
Mechanically it may be prudent to buy a rotten vehicle and strip it for mechanical spares. There is no issue with rebuilding an engine or transmission and storing it correctly, and obtaining some of the hard to get bits.
