Its about £30-£40 for a CV so the fitting charge is over £500! Must be more to it than that.
I would take it to somewhere else and use breaker parts to fix.
Hope your not caught in the trap ......"known the mechanic for years, he would not rip me off" and cant go elsewhere so you dont offend.

My wife's charade needed both cv's as well, and this is actually the truth, the price per side is around £600, as both the inner and outer come as a single driveshaft unit. Unable to buy outers only, no aftermarket available, unless some reconditioned...
Which year & model is your Charade?
My wife's is a 53 reg SL, and by contacting Daihatsu UK, they in turn contacted Daihatsu Japan and managed to get both sides replaced free of charge, as there was a known issue with them. However, this applied to a selected line of models. We just happened to qualify! This is even though there is 90000miles on the clock and we bought it 2nd hand! They basically check if there was any other warranty work done and will make a decision based on that.
