oil consumption on sportrak

Forum:

I have a 1996 1.6i sportrak which is using approx a pint of oil every 150 miles. I have checked the compressions- all about 200 psi, no visible leaks. Cars drives well and is'nt smokey at all so where is the oil going? I have checked the two pcv pipes on the top of the engine and they are clear, is there any where else I should be looking? Any help would be much appreciated.

is there a visible

is there a visible leak/wetness on the floor/engine etc?

Currently on 15-40w, I have

Currently on 15-40w, I have looked for any obvoius leaks but maybe I should be looking for somthing more subtle. If it stops raining I will take the sump guard off again today and have another look.

Are there any well known leaky spots?

Well I had a good look around

Well I had a good look around and underneath the engine and there are no signs of any leaks. I also checked with the engine running and found no leaks at all.

Any one any ideas where the oil is going?

if you have no external leaks

if you have no external leaks the only place the oil can be going is down the exhaust in a vapour, your oil is being lost internally, probably worn rings/bore despite the good psi test[could be "sealing" with oil] even if the leak was through the bell housing towards the gearbox it would have leaked out onto the floor by now, regards, kirk

rev it

whats the smoke colour? i would say piston rings.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

My first thought would be

My first thought would be rings too, despite the lack of smoke. Have you tried taking the oil filler cap off while the engine is running. If the rings are leaking you should get exhust gases escaping through it, as well as excesive air movement out of it.
The only other thing I can sugest is that the oil is making it's way into the water system via a leaky head gasket. Though normally if this hapense the oil level goes up, as it's water that gets into the oil. Is the water level increasing? Is there a brown gunk inside the top of the rad? or inside the rocker cover for that matter? All this is conjecture, and posibly not very likely, however if it's not going out the exhoust, or onto the floor, it must still be in the system somewhere...?

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

I have noticed that if i motor downhill with my foot off the accelerator and then apply some throttle there is a large cloud of blue smoke just for a short while and then it appears to burn clean again. Question: is this likely to be rings or poss valve guides?

many thyanks for any inputs

i have the same problem. "I

i have the same problem.
"I have noticed that if i motor downhill with my foot off the accelerator and then apply some throttle there is a large cloud of blue smoke just for a short while and then it appears to burn clean again."
i did the pressure test and a get 13.9Bar on all 4 pistons.
changed valve seals 5 months ago and after 1 month a got a little smoke now it's much more smoke and a lot of oil consumption. the water is clean and the oil is clean. i have noticed a little oil on the engine-trans joint but no oil leak and no oil drops.
i suspect that the new seals have a low quality. So my next step is to open the head cover and take a look what is going on inside. maybe the seals just pop-out or some bolts loosen like a have the last time but then there was a air in the water.
Sorry for my bad grammar.

Best guess

The engine over-run condition described when going downhill then followed by acceleration with a cloud of blue exhaust smoke is typical of valve stem oil leakage.

I owned a Lada Niva 4wd for 8 years so I have seen most things of the oily nature. Every day was an adventure.

Offroad, let's getgripped.

Grade

What grade of oil are you using?
Have you tried an oil additive?

My first thought would be

My first thought would be rings, but this would show with blue smoke from the exhaust.
The other problem i would suggest are valve stem oil seals, or worn valve guides which can be checked with the rocker cover off.

Is the crankshaft oil seal leaking into the bellhousing, or are the main bearings gone, which could explain oil losses.

I have tighten the head

I have tighten the head screws today whit 63N and i found 4-5 screws loose about 1/4 - 1/2 circle.
But there is still blue smoke when the engine is warm and almost no smoke when cold.
when i reb. the engine to 4000-5000 rpm i have blue-black smoke and then allow the engine to idle and reb. again but in the moment when i press the gas pedal again i have a lot of almost white smoke.
i still think my problem are the valve seals.
i will make some videos in the next few days.

like i said , valve seals

like i said , valve seals were bad.
changed them and there is no more smoke at all. but i did a mistake that i will pay expensive. i have mistaken the timing belt by one teeth and have very early ignition. the result of that was blown gasket or cracked head on piston 3 and 4. i removed and re-tight the head bolts whit 65N but no luck. tomorrow i will open the head and see how much damage i have done. now all i can do is hope that it's the gasket.
