Daihatsu Feroza starting and idle problems

Forum:

Hey guys,

first of all thanks to all who helped me with my brake problems. Gave them brakes some elbow grease and a lot of tlc. Passed the mot like a brand new car. Now its time to deal with the other problems. Then i try to start the car after standing a few hours its starts, revs up to 1100rpm and then chokes and dies. And it wont work no matter how much i try, it starts but dies after about 10 second. The only way i get the car o work is by pressing down on the gas pedal and rev it up to 2000rpm. After the engine is warm it starts and stays working. The second problem is with driving. If i try to start driving it has a lack on power with low revs and if i push the gas pedal down rapidly its dies. If the engine reaches its maximum temperature it slowly cures itself and works like a normal car. I have changed the distributor cap, distributor arm, sparkplugs, oil, air filter. Another funny thing is that then i rev it up to 4000rpm and let loose of the gas pedal and then push it down again it spits fire from the exhaust pipe. Sorry for my poor english skills please ask if anything is not understandable.

Try these.

1. Check the advance/retard weights in the distributor. The weights govern the acceleration etc.
2. Have you adjusted the distributor's contacts correctly whilst the flywheel is at the correct btc.
3. Correct type and gap of spark plugs.
4. Next - a big job. Check the timing belt. At 60K intervals the belt should be renewed before it breaks.

Hey Mace, thank you so much

Hey Mace,

thank you so much for your answer. The spark plugs are correct, order was taken with the help of a catalog. As soon as the weather gets a bit warmer i will try these things you suggested. The timing belt is old im affraid since the car belongs to my stepdad, the car has had a good mainteance. My stepdad painted the rims silver and put a sticker of a eagle on the hood and the most important thing he installed some fog lights in the front that are illegal Biggrin as you can see, i have a lot of work to do Sad for now the most important thing is to chance the oil in the gearbox because with -25 degrees celcius i have to change gears with both of my hands.

hello

So i checked it out, Ignition worked well, everything is ship-shape with that. I have another theory. Im thinking is it possible, that perhaps the accelerations pump isnt working. That explains why it chokes then i press the gas pedal rapidly down. Still havent find the reason why with a cold start it dont work propely and dies. The fuel filters are new, the mechanical fuel pump is working well. Any other advise could really help me now.

A lots of thanks,
Edgar from Estonia

Distributor weights.

Edger.
Warning - If the cam belt snaps the engine will be a scapper. Old cam belts will snap. Change at he service schedule or expect a big bang!
Did you take out the distributor and check the advance/retard weights? Do you know where to find them? If they are sticking you get no acceleration and stalling which is very likely accompanied by poor/flooded restart.

Thanks for the heads-up. I

Thanks for the heads-up. I Ordered a new timing belt set ( dont now whats in it yet but its a 100$ more then just the belt). I also bought brand new spark plugs with to thing that makes the spark ( sorry cant remember the proper name ). Thats about it, i dont have the time now to do something else because daddy wants his car back to give it to some grease monkey for a installation of a snow plow. Lets just hope the hydralics pump and clutch takes that kind of pressuse. I want to thank you all for being so supporting and helpful. As soon as i have something done i will inform you. But for now drive safe and sexy and keep it off the road !
