Lost key = £1700 bill...?

Forum:

My wife has a Sirion (~2000 model).
It came with only one key, and before we could get another cut, it's gone missing.
Her insurance won't cover it, and after ringing a dealer, the bill would be around £1700 (more than the car is worth!) as it would need a new ECU and immobiliser as well as the lockset and keys.

So, firstly - really..? Can't they just do the locks and code a new key to the car?! This seems pretty weird to me.
Next - is there a service manual anywhere? I've googled but no luck. I'm thinking if we can get a broken sirion with the same engine/gearbox I can swap all the bits myself, but haynes don't make a manual and I can't find a PDF. I read that dealers will sell you one on CD but when I asked it was over £200!

First of the Daihatsu range

First off the Daihatsu range normally come with 3 keys. The Black key is a master one that can be used to programme any Grey key.

Secondly If it's a new ECU and keys you need, E-bay is your friend, there are plenty of Sirions especially mark 1's that are being scrapped for parts at the moment, so a bargain less than the £1700 is to be found. As a starter there is a E-bay seller who specialises in Sirions on E-bay called Phil (Patch2Spots) give him a call on; 07780637719 who should be able to advise you.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies -

Thanks for all the replies - some useful information to go on.

We got the car "broken into" by the breakdown people today, hoping the key was in the boot... but alas not. So we'll be chasing up all the information you have provided.
Thanks!
