YRV Offside Headlight Brightness

Forum:

My wifes YRV has developed a problem over the weekend. The Offside Headlight has become so dim that it's barely visable. So today I've fitted a new headlight bulb and guess what - it too is very dim and barely visible. So I swapped with the nearside bulb (which is working fine) The nearside bulb is dim when plugged into the Offside lamp and the offside bulb burns at full brightness when plugged into the nearside - therefore the bulbs are fine!!

So I've had my voltmeter on the case which shows that I have full voltage at the nearside bulb and below full voltage (3 - 10v, variable) at the offside.

Also at the same time the headlight level adjusters seem to be working for no apparent reason and I can also hear an unlocatable relay clicking on and off somewhere behind the instrument binnacle in the dashboard.

Now electrical gremlins are not my area of expertease, so before I come over all Basil Fawlty and give the car a good thrashing with a big stick I'd appreciate it if any forum members could share their wisdom with some pointers of what to look at.

What I want to avoid is taking the car to a garage with an unspecified fault as I fear I'd be writing a blank cheque to sort out whatever gremlins have developed. Apart from this, the car (a 52 plate), has been pretty bullet proof with no faults in the past 8 years of ownership.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the

Hi and welcome to the forum.

First off - the headlamp levellers. Mine occasionally chatter away for no apparent reason, usually when setting the level to "0" (uppermost setting). My previous YRV also did this; stupid design perhaps? Many wouldn't notice as you are normally inside the car with the engine running when the lights are on and therefore you normally wouldn't hear it! I found when giving the lamp a clout or pushing on it in a certain manner, it would stop. Not a cure I know, and I haven't a clue why they do it!

Are the female connections that connect to the bulb clean and corrosion free? Is the MAIN beam ok or is it just the dipped beam that is dull? It has to be a poor connection, likely to be at the headlamp end I would of thought, and any corrosion/damp ingress could compromise the connection. Try and get your meter in the back of the connector to get a reading (I'm not familiar with the type of connector, never looked) or be naughty and skin some wire back on the wires and get a reading there to see if it is the connector that's at fault; don't forget to make good afterwards........
The wiring itself disappears into a loom, and as far as I know there are not any other connections to check apart from the fuse box end. Someone else may shed more light (no pun intended) on it. Let us know if you find anything Wink

Hi, thanks for the quick

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. In response to your query, main beam does not work on the offide and the bulb remains really dull. I've only managed to have an examination of the car tonight by torchlight so it may have to wait until the weekend for a more detailed look to see what's what.

Just a thought. Does the YRV

Just a thought.
Does the YRV have a resistor in line for sidelights similar to the 4x4's? The resistor dims the high beam for sidelight use. Maybe there is a problem at the relays or switch stalk that is only letting the one headlamp come on as a sidelight.

Guys, thanks for all the

Guys, thanks for all the advice - I guess I'm going to have some fun over the weekend trying to sort out this issue! I will report my success (or otherwise) back to the board.

Fixed!!

Just to let you all know that some further reading on here revealled the presence of a second fusebox under the dashboard - a quick look showed that the fuse for the OSF headlight was blown - fixed and all good except for another problem!! a new post will follow!!
