Charade '95 automatic wont start

Hi guys,

I have a Charade '95 1.3 EFI automatic transmission.

This morning when I was about to drive my youngest to school, the engine cranked, then stopped and nothing happened. I tried again, but the engine did not start, and I noticed "auto" was blinking on the dashboard. The engine lamp is also lit very dimly and the oil lamp is lit. There is oil.

I tried googling but found nothing.

I was really hoping any of you guys could help out!

I just went through all the fuses etc, and disconnected the battery for a couple of minutes. It does the same. I didn't notice it first, but when it's "on", there is a strange sound, hissing, like gas or something coming from the engine - Can't quite place it. Auto blinks steadily and I am not allowed to start the engine.

I'd probably check the battery charge first... been quite a few flat batteries around. Do you have another car to swap batteries or jump?

There is charge on the battery - It's fairly new, I know because I've tried having a bad battery on that car.

When the ignition is "on" there is a strange hissing/whirring noise - as I wrote "auto" blinks and absolutely nothing happens when I turn the key to "start" (well the electricity stops).

I am thinking maybe the P/N-start inhibitor switch or the starter engine itself - I guess I will have to drag it to a mechanic...
