Forum:
I am going to change the oil in all of the above as part of a major service on my new Fourtrak. I have read through the service manual and noticed that it recommends using GL-3 oils in the diffs and tbox but GL-5 oil in the gearbox. As GL-5 is a better grade of protection is there any reason why I shouldn't just buy a big tub of GL-5 grade oil and use that for everything?
Also the manual says use weights 80, 85 or 90W for the gearbox and diffs but 75W-85 for the transfer box. Would putting 80W90 in everything be a good bet?

Thanks,

ep-90
if you use ep-90 all round that will be fine, especially for hotter summers weather.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

GL3 is a mineral oil, GL5 is
GL3 is a mineral oil, GL5 is synthetic, so using GL5 is the better option, and yes you can use this in all the transmission components.
This is recommended in many countries, but not in the EU as lower grade oils are specified as vehicle maintenance is better. This means they can be changed more often, and recommended so dealers have more work(and profit) on a vehicle.
Most people use one oil in their transmissions, and moving up to an EP 80/90 grade offers more protection for the transfer case.
Ok. so I think I will go woth
