Forum:
Grrrrr damn sportrak, lost my keys three weeks ago so I bought a barrel, key, and door locks of eBay fitted them and now it won't start . There is a plastic ring around the top of the barrel with two wires going to it , are these an emobaliser , if it is ( which I expect so) how can I now get the car started . Cheers all. Simon
keyfob
did your original key have a code on it ?? which is linked via radio signal to ecu then to immobiliser? if so your a bit buggered.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

P reg, yep it turns over but
P reg, yep it turns over but only like it would if it was empty of fuel (it's not) the key I have now is a small one and the original was larger. Is there any way of getting a key for the original lock ( the one I lost ) ie/ from my reg number
right no imob
no imob problem then, as that wont turn a starter if it was activated, check fuel etc.

Toggle Switch.
P reg Sportrak did not have an immobiliser attached to the start key. The immobliser was energised by an independant toggle switch and it was fitted beneath the dashboard under the steering wheel. If you are certain the car was being immobilised via a starter-key factory fit, it is unusual. Perhaps you assumed it was immobilised using the starter-key and then key locking the drivers door.
Perhaps you have done what many 'immobilised Sporties' have suffered and knocked/set the toggle switch and unknowlingly immobilised the car.
One Sporty owner's car was almost dismantled by mechanics who were at a loss finding the reason for immobilisation. The owner had run the car for 3 years believing the immobiliser was energised by use of the starter-key. It cost her over £500 in towing and garage costs. What she had done was when getting out from the driving seat was to catch her knee against the toggle switch and unknowingly set the immobiliser.
Message me and let me know if I am correct !
I sold a red, low mileage, P reg Sporty about 2 years ago .... It would be a coincidence if it was my Sporty, how long have you owned it?
That's odd mace I can't find
That's odd mace I can't find anything under the steering wheel that looks like that, any ideas what the plastic ring with a plastic box and wires connected to it is , it looks like a sensor to me . I'll double check when I get back from work .
thats why
i wondered if it was a radar sensor, pehaps it is, and that its an imobiliser that does turn engine but wont activate ignition, what was on the old barrel? is there something that you can swop over? is there a keyfob? i think you might be stuffed on this and will need n auto electrition to sort it for you, access to the ecu may be required and its not obd2 which is nice n easy, i think its one of those problems that needs to be sorted by a trained proffessional- car electrics rrrghhh

Nope it's black plastic , red
Nope it's black plastic , red wire/ blue wire
More for you ................
I have no idea about the wires etc. I doubt it is anything connected to an immobiliser. Have you identified the immobiliser's unit inside the engine compartment? Most came with a disarming key - the unit has a key hole under a plastic cover.
A toggle switch could be hidden elsewhere - glove box or any other discrete place. You will need to inspect/run your finger behind panels etc. Easily knocked 'off' whilst fitting a replacement ignition switch and door locks.
Another check you should make is the 30amp fuse attached to the 12v battery positive cable. There are 'inline fuses' hidden inside connectors on the battery terminal. You might have failed to notice them. Check that both are OK.
Typical...... I bought all
Typical...... I bought all the locks etc and weeks of no car all this hassle and I go n find my original keys in a draw full of junk, why it was in there I'll never know. Anyway after getting the new barrel fitted but not working because of the emobiliser all I had to do was pop out the internal barrel using new key and pop old internal back in, one turn of the key and of she went ..... It's now for sale
sooo
im guessing i might be right in saying radar immobiliser on the key??????
