YRV Turbo Question

Forum:

Hello again,

been a while since I have posted but just getting to grips with my YRV.

I have a few questions :

1 - Does your Turbo make swish/woosh sound? It seems to get louder when you have been rev'ing the car more. When I first start driving I dont notice it, but I was on the back roads tonight having fun and I really noticed it. Was actually quite loud in 2nd and 3rd. Drove home at 70mph on the dual carriageway, for about 15miles, and then when I pulled back into town it seemed to have gone. Performance seemed the same, just wondering if this is normal? My Saab turbo use to whistle a little but you could never hear it other than that, and it was an HOT.

2 - My second to third gear change keeps making a small screechy/pinging sound. Only does it 2nd to 3rd, and when you have the foot on the accelerator. If you are in manual mode, and take your foot of the pedal and change gear there is no sound. Special Points if anyone can help? The ATF Fluid has been checked and is fine. The car changes gear just fine.

I really appreciate your help.

Just a little update on how I am getting on :

I know have my Godspeed Discs and Pads (thanks Jon!), Tein S Springs, 15" Alloys (ordered but waiting for delivery), and I am getting my Custom CAT Back exhaust fitted in a few weeks as my exhaust is rusted and there is holes and cracks in it. Then have a bodyshop who are sorting the small rust areas. Nothing is fitted to the car yet, want to make sure its running fine first. But when I am ready, will get it all done and post up some pics.

Thanks guys

Ryan

Hello again. Glad you are

Hello again. Glad you are enjoying your car. To answer some of your questions:

The wooshing sound sounds like the BOV (Blow off Valve), do you know if you have an aftermarket one fitted? The only whoosh I get with mine is due to the after Market Stainless steel Blitz filter I have on instead of the Standard airbox. Talking of which you do have a filter in the airbox?

The gearbox doesn't sound right, although they ain't the smoothest of auto-boxes I don't recall mine making any strange sounds. I take it you have seen in the image gallery (Thanks Daihatsu Dave) and on a post on here that the autoboxes also have a filter which can be changed, and it appears not many daihatsu garages are aware of it.

Have my new discs and pads on my car now with the new race rear brake shoes. Brakes are a lot better now and even better when I got the DOT 5.1 Synthetic brake fluid put in by the daihatsu garage, they even bled the entire system including the ABS and checked it over with their Daihatsu DSR-2 in the ODB-II to make sure it had no errors afterwards.
Only downside to the pads is that you get a lot of brake dust.

Oh something else to check on your car. My rear anti-roll bar bracket on the off-side has snapped (After 7 1/2 years). I beleive they were covered under warranty by Daihatsu and uprated brackets were supplied and fitted.

And I too have the dreaded rust blight showing in places. In for a busy summer Smile

Thanks guys, will have a look under the bonnet. My car is still standard at the moment.

My rear anti-roll bar seems fine, at the moment anyway. Had a good look at it and seems sturdy. My exhaust has also been changed from the back box back to the tails. When the custom exhaust guy was looking at it he noticed that this had been changed to stainless steel. I never noticed. The rest of it is original so that is getting ripped out as rusted.

Going to have to get the gearbox looked at. The weird thing with my YRV is that it runs great cold, no noise what so ever, only makes the noise when warmed up? Weird.

Hopefully not be too expensive! Will let you know the outcome.

Strange too when hot?? or gearbox is knocked?

I am new to Yrv, mine today freaked completely out after doing 3 miles. our temp here was 27 degrees celcius. went to a shop, 20 min , back in car. The reverse gear made that knock that the engine seemed fall off. switched off immediately. then left to neutral for 2 min and put to D4. the speedometer ( aware of problems 2 weeks ago) freaked out turning the needle everywhere going at 20km per hour and the gear status on the ODO display were flashing non constantly and sometimes I haven`t seem the numbers at all. How can I diagnose these problems please. And when going 20kph and got to highroad I accelerated it knocked from 2nd to 3rd again and decreased speed . its like a missed gear. Mine is an import one JDM. YRV turbo automatic. Thanks again

SWISH WOOSH sound normal as

SWISH WOOSH sound normal as i`m aware, mine does it quite loud but i have a HKS filter, its only the wastegate. As for the gear noise,if its running fine then dont worry, you`ve checked the fluid and its ok so should be good, mine makes a small noise from cold when i select drive first thing in morning.jon should be able to make a better judgement but it should be fine:-)

Mine makes a little psss

Mine makes a little psss noise when on boost, nothing loud and noticeable in the car more so. You should only hear the BOV/Dump Valve when lifting off the gas when on boost, I cannot hear mine as gears change as the demand for boost is still there. I certainly hear my dump valve when lifting off the gas though. Check the small rubber pipe that comes from under the plastic engine top cover and pushes into the air intake pipe before the BOV. I have noticed if this is not fully inserted, the BOV noise is alot louder. As Mark said, his gearbox (and mine) make a noise when cold and as jon stated, the changes are not always the smoothest, I notice 2nd to 3rd in steershift can be quite abrupt. My car is still standard at the moment so I can still hear the odd noise these things make (unlike the others with their loud exhausts !! - I'm only jealous........)

Just check all vacuum/boost hoses (theres a few under the cover) are all intact/not split etc as the smallest leak will make a noise (and cost you power!)

My turbo also makes a bit of

My turbo also makes a bit of inlet noise on high boost, nothing until about 6psi then you hear inlet whoosing, I was curious that i could have a boost leak but have checked every connection from turbo to throttle body, everthing is fine and never been touched since the factory.

Boost level is also correct on the gauge.

I guess its just a characteristic of the airbox/turbo and inlet design.
