Thinking of buying a YRV Turbo

Forum:

Hi guys,

Great site and I have done a lot of reading up here.

I am thinking of buying a YRV turbo and was looking for some tips on what to look out for and have a couple of questions. I see that the jist seems to get one with 100% service history. I am on a rather tight budget so im hoping I can achieve this. Also, what I want to know is are the cars full autos as I got confused trying to figure this out. Can I just put my foot on the throttle and go after putting in drive?

I currently have an imported Honda SMX and have found that not many garages would look at it if it developed problems. Is the YRV turbo the same and is a main dealer issue for everything as there isnt a dealer local to where I live.

So any tips on what to look out for when I go to see some or common known faults would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to the

Hi and welcome to the Forum

These are good little cars, and there's a few of us here who own them so you are in the best place.

Gearbox: A conventional fully automatic box with the usual floor mounted lever, P N R D 3 & 2 so yes, chuck it in drive and off you go if you wish. It's a four speed box with overdrive. The other (and more fun) option is to press the steershift button on the dash and select the gears with the +/- buttons on the steering wheel. Put the car into D4 (drive) with the lever and hit the steershift button. It will change down for you when slowing down but not up. The car goes ALOT better in this mode.

Faults:

There have been reports of the gearboxes failing. Why? No one knows. Most don't appear to have the ATF fluid replaced at the specified 56k/6 year interval along with the recently discovered gearbox strainer/filter. This I am sure will contribute to early failures no doubt. Reports of the D4 Gearbox light flashing is thought to be caused by insufficient voltage to the gearbox ECU, mine does this - just haven't got round to replacing the battery yet! Don't let this put you off.

Front Brake Discs. These can rust excessively in the outer inside edge due to poorly maintained/lubricated brake callipers. Callipers are easy to clean and lubricate with Mintex Cera Tec Grease (don't use copper grease). Mine had new discs last year and are still fine.

Rear Anti Roll Bar Brackets. The can snap leading to a knocking noise from the rear (Exhaust can also knock on the underside when cornering hard if the exhaust hangers are weak like mine are so check what it is if it knocks) The original ones (like mine!) are thinner angle iron I believe and the newer replacement ones are alot thicker. A lot were done under warranty.

Exhaust Twin Pipe Section. Where the two pipes merge into one, they can rust and snap. Again most were replaced with a stainless? item under warranty. The way to tell is the new tailpipes roll inwards, older ones roll outwards.

Original Alloy Wheels. These corrode for fun. Don't be put off by them, they are all like it!! Get them re-furbed or get some nice new ones.

CHECK FOR FSH!!

Cannot stress this enough. Supposed to be serviced every 6k/1 year.

OIL AND FILTER - 6K/1 YEAR
PLUGS - CHECK EVERY 2 YEARS 18K ~(PROVIDING LONGLIFE ONES ARE INSTALLED)
AIR FILTER - 27K/3 YEARS
COOLANT - 2 YEARS
BRAKE FLUID - 2 YEARS
ATF FLUID - 56K/6 YEARS

I do my oil every 3k/3months with a FULLY SYNTHETIC oil. Don't scrimp on oil. There engines work very hard and get very hot, so clean decent oil is vital.

There are a few out there that won't be serviced every 6k etc. Mine's only done 27k and has been to a dealer every single year but has not covered 6k in between services - perfect. Having said that the air filter was never ever changed! Did that myself. Expect to pay £35 approx from Andrew Pages for an air filter, more from a dealer.

These are not "specialist cars" they can be just quirky, so a decent garage should be able to look after it for you. Some parts are main dealer only, but ask here first as pattern parts are often available.

I've bound to have left something out - Just come out of hospital and I am half asleep. Keep us informed of what you find, and if you have any more questions just ask us.

Just check all the usual VIN numbers on the plate/papers match etc and that it's an honest car!

Good luck!

Well detailed Wayne even if

Well detailed Wayne even if your not on full cylinders. Smile Hope you are okay? Or did the Baby come early? Wink

Just to add that the service intervals should be either 6 months or 6,000 miles, what ever comes first. And as Wayne has mentioned the engines are only 1.3 16V DOHC with DVVT and a Turbo and tuned to around 130Bhp. So for a small car and engine it's doing a lot of grunt work.

As for servicing, then no problem as Daihatsu officially imported the car over from Japan and made U.K ready, so they will look at this for you. Oh and you are aware there were only 210 imported in? And there have been some written off due to accident damage. The Car is also only on Group 8 Insurance and roughly will cost you £168 in road tax a year.

The only downsides to this car is that for some reason (Even Dealerships) can get the parts wrong when need to be replaced. A primary example is that the YRV and YRV Turbo don't share the same size brake discs. The standard YRV uses 234mm where as the Turbo has 246mm.

Oh and welcome to the forums Wink

No Baby, I had my Appendix

No Baby, I had my Appendix out. Woke up early Sunday in agony. 3 Night in hospital minus my appendix I'm home..........in pain.

I always thought the intervals were 6k/6 months like you say, but looking in my book it says 6k/1 year, unless you follow the severe driving schedule which only really relates to the oil getting done every 3k/3 months. I always said that my history was questionable as it never had 6 monthly stamps although the mileage was well within, but now I am not so sure.........UNLESS you look in the actual service book itself with the added Turbo stickers in every other box, then this would mean every 6k/6 months as you say. The two books contradict themselves. Either the oil is done every 6k/1 year as per the manual or every 3k/3 months as per the manual's severe schedule OR every 6k/6 months as per the service book, which at the end of the day apart from the turbo stickers, is a generic Daihatsu book. A load of contradicting rubbish!!

Thanks for the info guys.

Thanks for the info guys. Very informative. Gonna mull over keeping my SMX or not and then make a decision. I went to see a non turbo yrv today to get a feel for it but it was a very poor example of one and not looked after at all. But the size and shape of the car are nice. One thing tho (could have been broke on this one as lots was) but do the cars have a height adjustable seat? The one I got into today was very low position but I couldn't for the life of me move the seat up

No worries. The drivers seat

No worries. The drivers seat on the turbo model has a height adjuster, but you do sit a little high. Unless you get new bucket seats like I did Wink

Have a look at the sticker on

Have a look at the sticker on the under side of the bonnet. Ours says 10000km (6000miles)/1yr or in brackets for severe conditions 5000km(3000miles) / 0.5 year). I'd go with this info rather than the service books. I've always serviced ours every year, and as we only do 2-3k a year this is fine. The oil is still fairly clean when I change it and the DVVT filter was perfect when I checked, so I would not be put of by lack of 6month stamps, as long as the mileage has not gone above the 6k miles between services.
