Hi all. I've just bought my first Daihatsu (fourtrak 1989 el)and am quite pleased so far.Problem I have is that it does not seem to want to go into 4 wheel drive. Is there something that I should be looking at before I send it into my loacl 4X4 centre. Any help and advice is very welcome

Ok, a couple of things. Does

Ok, a couple of things.
Does it have free wheeling hubs? Look at the front hubs, in the centre, is there printing saying something like, 4x2 4x4 lock free? If so, then there is a turning part in the centre. There should be an arrow or similar on this part. You have to turn it so it points to 4x4 or lock, to engauge 4wd. You have to do this to both sides.

Does yours have manual 4wd selection? Look at the knob on the 4wd selection lever. Does it say 2H-4H-N-4L or just 2H-N-4L. If the latter is the case, then there should be a button somewhere on the dash with 4wd on it. You need to push this button to engauge 4wd. Others on this board can elaberate on where exactly, and the operation of auto hubs.

4X4

Are you trying to select 4X4 on the move or stationary. You can do it on the move if the tyres on the front and rear are the same but you will have trouble if the tyres are a slightly different size, I have 2 F75 Rockys and have always used Kumhos on my DX however I am now putting the new tyres on my wife's EX and now have a mixed set on my DX and it no longer goes into 4X4 on the move. I also need to reverse a little to get it to disengage.

I havent tried on the move ye

I havent tried on the move yet, always stationary. The truck seems to go into low ratio when 4l is engaged but then I get no high ratio when I press the 4h button on the dash, also the light on the dash does not come on

4 wheel drive

When you push the dash button for 4H, do you actually know that it isnt engaging? Because from whats been said on here in the past (because im a sportrak owner, not fourtrak) quite a few people have trouble with the light on the dash not working, but the car is in 4wd.

One way to check, i think, is if you push the 4wd button to engage 4wd and get under the car and try to turn the front prop shaft. if it wont turn, 4wd is working.

Hope thats of some help,
Nat

thanks. I'll give it a go but

thanks. I'll give it a go but still even if it is in 4 wheel drive, whether the button on the dash is in or out the truck is still in low ratio. I'll go out now and play with it. I'll post my finds here. Thanks.

4 wheel drive

To use 4 wheel high ratio, I think the lever selector must be in 2 wheel mode and only then push the 4 wheel high button on the dash. This will select 4 high.If the 4 low selector is used then thats where the drive stays.

Right, this is getting confus

Right, this is getting confusing. I've just had the truck up on ramps with the front wheels up and the selector set at 2h and the button out, when I turn a front wheel, the prop shaft turns.
When on the road, pushing the button on the dash seems to make no difference at all. When I select 4l with the lever, I can here a clicking noise somewhere behind the dash or in the engine compartment.

Right, so the fact that you c

Right, so the fact that you can turn the wheel by hand means it must be disengaged from the gearbox (assuming you tested it with the gearbox in gear). Therefore it is in 2wd ok.

If you then leave the transfer box leaver in 2H position, and push the dash button, then with the car in gear (engine off) the front wheels shouldnt turn, therefore 4wd high ratio works.

Pulling the leaver into 4L position, again the wheels wont turn, and when driving it will be very slow due to the low ratio gears.

If you are driving along in 2wd and stop and push the dash button, you wont notice anything when you pull away, because the gear ratios are exactly the same, but the front wheels are now being powered too. However, if you try turning sharply the steering will feel heavy, and the tyres will try to spin/skip as you turn (dont do this too much tho as it will cause damage).

The clicking you can hear when selecting 4L is the relay i think, as it is a vacuum that engages low ratio... altho fourtrack owners on here will know more about that.

Does any of this make sense?!!
