Sirion Engine Light & Losing Power/Hopping

Forum:

My '98 Sirion has been randomly losing power, making it drive like it's kangaroo hopping along. It might happen for a kilometre then drive ten kms without a problem. While it loses power the engine light comes on.

Have put it into mechanic today but I'd like a second opinion. They've told me it's probably the TPS (Transmission Positioning System) but they didn't sound too sure.

Anyone else had this happen?

Diagnosing problems

To identify an intermittent problem like this you need a little, relatively inexpensive instrument that every service station should have for just such cases. It plugs into the car's diagnostic socket under the dash and watches the car's sensors while you drive. When a fault appears you can check the error code of the problem...leading to the solution.

I have such an instrument (a useful 12k miles from you). It's called a Scangauge 11 and gives all sorts of really interesting information about your car as you drive. Cost me about £135. There are other such instruments.

A service station even with the best of intentions can take time and money to find intermittent faults.

Btw, the fault could be all sorts of things from your description.

TPS....is usualy the term for Throttle Position Sensor.

Get a replacement sensor or the whole throttle body.
For parts try this guy - phil on 07780637719 Lancaster, or Ebay Sirion breakers.
