Unichip-Q+ now fitted to my YRV Turbo

Forum:

Some of you maybe aware that after 3 years of research and looking I have now found a garage (WGT Autos in Middlewich) who supply, fit and map the Unichip ECU. Well today was the day and I now have this fitted. The Unichip U have is the latest one called the Unichip Q+. this has more features than the previous model, as it can also up boost pressures.

Okay the bad points first;

1. Not cheap but cheaper than mapping other cars like the Subaru.
2. As our intercooler is small the charge temps were too high to put more boost on. So standard until I can get a bigger intercooler Smile
3. As it is an Auto it didn't Dyno too well. At best showed 102bhp before at the fly wheel.

Now the good;

1. Even though no boost could be added due to heatsoak, I still managed a 17bhp increase.
2. The autobox is now slicker with power coming in @ 3rd gear.
3. Better fuel mixture now, as before the car was running rich so hopefully better MPG.
4. Take off speed is a lot better Wink
5. Can get bigger injectors and have the car re-mapped again.

So far so good, didn't get to drive it much to try out steer-shift etc. But will keep you posted Smile

Intercooler mod

Interesting to hear your results. I have done a little mod that may help you out. If you have a look under the bonnet at the scoop you will see that the air entering the scoop can get out under neath instead of being forced through the intercooler duct. I used some black gaffer tape to seal the scoop to the bonnet so all the air is forced through the intercooler. Won't make a huge difference like a bigger intercooler, I know, but every little helps.

Nice Smile How did they dyno the car? In Auto or SteerShift?

Good stuff! Now i know the gearbox can handle it I think i will bump mine up a little bit more. Running about 150hp at moment, 0.9 bar peak

160-170bhp I will be happy enough with, without needing to buy custom management.

105bhp, that's BHP at the

105bhp, that's BHP at the wheels, not flywheel.

Dyno's only measure at the wheels and then estimate what the flywheel power is, by taking typical drivetrain losses into consideration.

For a small FWD car with manual gearbox you are normally looking at 15% power loss from engine to wheels, But for automatic, Probably more like 20-25% drivetrain loss.

So 105hp at the wheels would be pretty much bang on correct for 129bhp YRV!

We are a bit odd in the UK, Many other countries when they modify and dyno cars they only quote the "at the wheels" horsepower figure (WHP), It's far more accurate and reliable.

Good to change the ATF afterwards

Good to change the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) after any long dyno session and be very very careful no to boil the brains of the little torque converter during the session.
