Something to watch and think WOW about!

Forum:

Here is my friend Yaser in his Charade GTti this weekend at brands hatch. Finished 3rd overall in first race (1st in his class) and 2nd overall in 2nd race).

I have helped and advised Yaser with the modifications to the car (developed over about 2 years to what it is now), and supplied quite a few of the parts so it makes me a bit proud!
Recently I supplied a custom made Multi-Layer-Steel head gasket (the only internal engine modification) so I'm quite relieved it's holding together well so far!!

Power is 245bhp and 200lbft torque, all from 3 cylinder 993cc.

You can only imagine the frustration from the other competitors!

WOW INDEED,,,that is one

WOW INDEED,,,that is one quick car,and 245bhp is amazing out of a 3 cylinder, nice one Smile

Oh how i love it when the

Oh how i love it when the awesome GTti gives the big boys more than a run for the money!
Even through the road noise i can still hear that distinct engine sound :P......shame the cameras so bouncy.
Never had the money to get mine to that standard, wish i had....dreamt about it many times tho.
Love my YRV Turbo but loved my Charade more Blush

Great time to start

Great time to start extracting some more power from the YRV Dave!

I'm just finishing making some pretty nice anodised alloy Manual boost controllers (cant stand the brass plumbing-type-fittings controllers seen on ebay)

Just getting a hose company to make up some silcone "protection boots" that keep the adjuster in place and they don't get scratched under the bonnet.

Will need someone to test one actually!

I would have trialed one for

I would have trialed one for you but i already have the kit just not got round to fitting it. voodoo mbc, 60mm Dragonsport guage and a HKS fcd. Its brass. . . . but painted black Smile bit disappointed at its size tho Sad

Be careful Dave, HKS is a

Be careful Dave, HKS is a slope style of FCD, rather than a solid clamp voltage style. I would not use one.

With slope style, the voltage output from map sensor is being altered (lowered) by the FCD all the time, at a lower scale to normal. (adjusted with the dial) With this style you still retain a fuel cut, but it will activate at higher boost levels.

Example:

0psi standard voltage 2.0v, with HKS 1.8v
10psi standard voltage 3.5v, with HKS 3.0v

and so on.

Problem is this can cause a lean fuel situation, or effect driving for normal driving and low boost, not just high boost.

With a clamp style FCD, the voltage is unaltered from the MAP sensor up until the FCD clamps still.

Example:

0psi standard voltage, 2.0v, clamp FCD 2.0v
10psi standard voltgae 3.5v, clamp FCD 3.5v
12psi (say just below the ECU fuel cut voltage level) 4.2v, clamp FCD 4.2v
anything over 12psi, if the clamp point is set at 4.2v the FCD holds voltage at 4.2v regardless of the boost. So the ECU never activates fuel cut.

Clamp style are better as all aspects of engine running remain unchanged below the FCD clamp point, But with this style you wont have any fuel cut.
(Not a problem if you monitor boost levels with gauge.)

Many of the problems people used to have with GTti such as head cracks or head gaskets (not so much these days with better knowledge) was when using HKS or similar slope style FCD's. They really need to have fuelling mods when using them.

i knew the dial clicks were

Sad i knew the dial clicks were at pre set values but assumed at maybe half or one volt increments? Not sure what to do now, picked it up fairly cheap but not got much cash lately to replace it. Had an Aussie made fcd on the GTti. . . . Fueltronics or some make like that.

Ah yes the old fueltronics

Ah yes the old fueltronics one, also a slope style I think. And that adjuster trim pot so sensitive on them, easy to set it wrong and then run too lean.

I can make a voltage clamp style one for you, It's a very basic circuit and the components only cost about £3! Although it's a bit fiddly and takes about 30 mins to make, I sell them on Ebay.

I can make you one to test, wouldn't charge as much as the Ebay price.

Thanks for the offer

Thanks for the offer Nathan...will be in touch once ive tested the HKS (Hong Kong Shit) fcd out!

Just thinking ive sold a few GTti bits to Yasser and wonder if they too are flying round the track Smile
