Hello all, i've joined this site in the hope one of you can help me solve an annoying problem with one of my fourtraks.
The engine needed replacing as the pistons were goosed and had a bent valve due to been stolen. Before taking the engine out the turbo whistled fine and still did it's part without any problem, this is where the problem started...
After replacing the engine i put the original turbo onto it which appered to be dead, rather confused by this i put another turbo on (which again worked fine) the same problem has occured, i can't get the turbo to function on this engine even though it runs perfectly well, i've gone from having a turbo to a non turbo!! Can anyone suggest anything, all the pipes are coupled up but something is obviously not right! I've even had my other fourtrak parked next to it to make sure everything looks the same, HELP!!!
Check the wastegate, this is
Check the wastegate, this is basically a pressure regulating the turbocharger pressure to prevent excess pressure building up. These are spring controlled and suffer from corrosion, this holds them either closed or open.
If the wastegate is open it means no pressure will build up from the turbo, thus reducing power and increasing black smoke.
If the wastegate is stuck shut it will overboost and damage the engine through excess compression and power.
