4WD BROKEN, HELP

Forum:

1989 2.8D Fourtrak with manual locking front hubs.

Only have rear wheel drive, but when 4wd is selected the front prop engagaes but the wheels are still free!

No nastly noises or loud bangs. Been told its the manual hubs (Aisin). How easy are they to change? and is there anything else it could be.

off-roading

Hi,

Did you got to the TV4x4 day near reading today? I wanted to go but have been away this weekend. If so was the new site any good? Or did 4wd break before you went?

Regards,
Nat

4wd

Hi Nat

Yes i went to the tv4x4 day, very good site that will get better as it gets used a bit (hopefully) and well worth going to.

I had problems a month ago at avon dassett, when it lost 4wd but started to work ok again.

As it was quite dry i didnt notice anything untill a wet section when i got stuck for a while, only having 2wd didnt help.

Regards

Pete

They are quite easy to change

They are quite easy to change. However it may well just need tacking off, cleaning and re-greasing. At the other end of the spectrum you might (though I dout it) have brocken a half shaft/universal joint.
To take off the free wheeling hub:
1) make sure hub is in free posision.
2) undo 5 10mm bolts on und of hub.
3) slid the end out of the body of the free wheeling hub. Be carful not to twist it about too much. If you dislodge the largew spring inside, it can be a git to re-thred.
If cleaning and greasing is all that's needed, stop here.
4) remove cerclip from end of half shaft.
5) undo 5 12mm bolts that join free wheeling hub to main hub.
Revurse to reasemble. The only tricky bit is getting the half shaft out enugh to reinsert the cerclip. There is a threded hole in the end of the shaft. Use a bolt to pull the shaft out. Also the end of the free wheeling hub only fites back in the main body in one of three positions. Only one of these positions matches up the bolt holes.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Thanks Nev, sounds easy (that means hassle for me normally) i will have a look at it this week.

The hubs are very difficult to turn from free to lock, so that might also be something.

Thanks
