Forum:

hi ive got a problem with my lights in my jeep. Its a 94 fourtrack and Ive got no tail lights or dash clock lights or front parks either. Brake lights and indicators work fine. Anyone come across this before or shed some light on the problem. have it in off the road this week so hoping to sort this out asap cheers

Yeah first thing i looked

Yeah first thing i looked at.Am wondering if there could be a fault in the light switch itself

Have discovered that there

Have discovered that there must be a short somewhere. But infuriatingly it seems to be an intermittent problem. It was working all day yesterday and then soon as I switched on the lights last night the fuse blew again... Is there anywhere where the problem is likely to be cause short of replacing the whole loom I cant see any other answer.

To locate the lamp ..........

Pull out the lamp holders and check the connections for corrosion. Also check where the cable passes through any access hole - possibly a worn cable. Sounds like a potential short on one lamp holder. The tail lights are probably the target.
You could remove a positive from a lamp holder and then switch on the lights. If they fuse then remove the next positive at the next lamp. This will focus which lamp is giving the problem.

Also make certain a blown bulb is not the problem and giving an open circuit!

Remember the number plate lamp is in the same light circuit. Have you checked for a worn/rotton cable hidden behind the bumper?

wiring probs.

As a poster mentioned it could well be a shorted bulb as when you turn the lights on the fuse blows, when bulbs blow they can go short. On the s/ trak there are connectors under each front seat. If the F/trak is the same you could undo the plugs which would isolate each rear light then see if it still shorts, if not your prob is at the back. The bulb holders do fall apart. The short is unlikely to be in the dash. Sorry to be hasty its 2 in the morning.

wiring probs

I had the same problem with mine. After alot of head scratching i eventually tracked it down to the center dashboard clocks the inclinometer light was shorting out. Bigd
