Sloppy near side front wheel...Steering loose somewhere...

Forum:

Hi all,

Once again the MOT threw up an issue. The nearside front wheel has a fair amount of play in it when moved left to right (wheel off the ground).
I know the guy who did my MOT, so we checked it after he'd finished (passed it as he judged it safe).
Wheel bearing is fine, as are the track rod ends. Couldn't check further without taking the crap shields off at the time. So I had a look whilst giving it a service yesterday.
It deffinately seems steering related. There's movement in the trackrod, through the steering idler (replaced that 2 years ago and still solid). The movement is less when I get to the off side, but there is still some there (I'm assuming the further away the more pro-nounced the movement will be which is why it is worse on the nearside). Again all ball joints seem pretty solid, as does the pitman arm.
The only thing I can think is that the steering box could do with slight adjustment...am I thinking right? if so, how do I use the adjuster correctly?
If that's not the case, can anyone shed some light? as the trak has taken a liking to wandering around on our lovingly maintained pot-hole ridden sussex roads, not to bad at the moment, but I'd rather it didn't get worse.

Thanks for any help!

Bearing

Test the wheel bearing again.
Possiblity the rear of the two bearings is worn.

Try 'locking' everthing rear of the brake disc. I use a G cramp and wooden blocks. Then wobble the wheel.

Just another thought - is the brake disc loose?

Other than that it is a 'trial and sort' until you find the reason.

My problem with the play at

My problem with the play at my nearside was the bush on the Idler arm,

Ball joint side of idler arm was solid, no play what so ever, but the bush was goosed,

I didnt know what the arm was called to be honest,

Asked on the site and once again members helped me out,

But I had lots of play when the wheel was off the ground, side to side movement,

I would check that bush anyway.

Beemers do it sideways

first of alllllll

What vehicle??? Im guessing old axled leafer as you said ball joints, the nearside front tends to damage the swivel bearings cos of the roads, can the wheel move back n forth when of the ground? Also you say everything seems solid inc the pitman arm soooo where is the movement Unknw It will be pretty obvious where there is play, if the steering box is at fault its easy, long screwdriver and a nut on top of box, slacken nut slightly tighten centre with screwdriver...very very slightly!!!! This will elliminate play at that position, my favourite through experience is swivel bearings have collapsed.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies!
I will have to check it all over again and find out, you've given me plenty of places to check. I'm hoping it's not the idler, as that is only 2 1/2 years old!

And I didn't state the age, it's a '97 TDX.

ah right

ignore what I said about swivel bearings then as that is for older axle fourtraks.
