Unidentified Object Under Car Leaking Petrol

Forum:

Hi Welcome to all and I wish my first contact to the forum would not be, my sportraks broken. Increasingly over a number of days I have noticed a strong smell of petrol coming from the rear drivers side of the car. Today I used £10 fuel going 3 miles and when I looked under the car I noticed fuel running from underneath the car. Upon inspection it was leaking from an object that looked like an aluminium can with big white plastic 'tit' coming from it, with a wire and I think fuel line going into it. It was no bigger than a coke can - does anyone have any ideas please my sportrak is dead in the water before I can at least recognise the part - Thanks Chad

fuel leak

It is of course as the man says the fuel pump. You really shouldn't carry on driving if you are losing that much fuel, unless of course "dying in a ball of flame" is your new hobby. Unfortunately petrol vapour really is that flammable even in cold weather. A similar problem was discussed on here before, I'm pretty sure. A new sportrak fuel pump is like £370 ...... or something like that. There has been talk of fitting a Bosch pump as a replacement as you would get one for very little from a scrap yard. Whether it would be a suitable fit is another question.
