Engine Cutting out under load

Forum:

hi All,
Got a very peculiar problem with my hi-jet 1300EFI. Starts ok, runs fine until it gets up to temperature, then after that if i press the throttle down hard, the engine cuts out and then instantly re fires, leaving me bunny hopping accross the road. If i feather the throttle carefully, it doesnt do it (much). The orange ECU light comes on with every cut out but as soon as its going again, its off. Its like it stalls and instantly re-starts. Also does it if i labour the engine.

Ive changed the temperature sensor, blown out the water line into the throttle body with air to make sure the water was getting to the sensor ok.

Also, it seems to overheat a bit. Not too much but just runs hot.

Anyone got any ideas? Its driving me mad.

Many Thanks
James

Hopping Hijet

James,

In the absence of in-depth system diagnostics my best guess is the problem is fuel starvation. I say that because of the throttle related things you mention and Engine Management Light illumination. I would even hazard a further guess of a blocked in line fuel filter or even the tank initial screen being blocked. Fuel starvation would very much account for the mild overheating as well. If you feel the problem has come on over a period of time it would support my theory.

It's the best I can do for you.

Regards

Phil

Sorry to bring up an old

Sorry to bring up an old thread but my little Hijet is suffering from the same problem, not sure if the original poster ever got things sorted but I've had the auto electrician on it today and has come back with fuel pump issue not giving out enough pressure. So has anyone got one of these for sale as I really could do with one

Hijet cutting out

I have a Piaggio Porter, it's identical to the hijet.
My van used to just cut out and back in randomly when getting low on fuel.
The problem was inside the fuel tank, it has a tray at the bottom of the tank which the fuel pump draws from, this tray is fed by a tube which was blocked, so the fault only appeared when the fuel level dropped below the top edges of the tray. The tray would empty of fuel quicker than it tricked in through the pipe.

Hope this helps you or someone with a similar problem

Fault codes

for future reference, if your warning light comes on you can get the actual fault code from it by connecting two wires together and then the warning light flashes instead. You just count the flashes and look at the list. There is a full "how to" write up and fault code list here on my website:- http://www.daihatsuhijet.co.uk/hijet-diagnostic-engine-warning-light-flash-codes/

This only works uptill about 2002/2003 models, after that they had an obd2 connector under the dashboard on the drivers side.
