Failed 1st MOT !

Forum:

Well I know she has been "used", though I wasn't totally surprised she failed.
Was down to ABS light won't go out. Have had it reset several times and it never lasts more than 1/2 hour.

Is begiining to look like it may be because I did the wheel bearings and might not have ben gentle enough with the ABS sensors when removing them. Although I don't know how I could have been any ore careful, but they were VERY tight.

So now she is at the stealer to have 2 new sensors fitted at great expense....just hope it works!

With ABS it is not usually

With ABS it is not usually the sensors, but could be a multitude of other things.

Check the sensors are within the correct proximity to the stator ring, and the stator ring is not damaged, clogged with dirt, and is firmly secured as many are a press fit stator. Any of these problems will prevent the sensor sending the correct signal as it is a resisted pulse sender. It requires both the top and bottom if the teeth to be clean to work properly as when the top of the tooth passes the sensor it generates the pulse, and uses the bottom of the tooth as the pause or space.

Check the wiring for corrosion, and ensure the wiring plugs are clean, if not it will increase the resistance and voltage the sensor generates and give the ABS ECU incorrect information. One favourite trick is for people to spray the sensor wiring plugs with WD40 and think they're doing the right thing. WD40 corrodes copper over time, and the contacts/pins in the plugs are copper. Use only electrical cleaner on them and fine sandpaper, once cleaned reassemble the plug and coat with Waxoyl as this is electrically inert and will soak in and coat the contacts to prevent corrosion.
