Hi Folks.Been ages since I was last in..mainly as the system never seems to recognise me !! Hence the change from "screaminkiwi" to The Screaminkiwi".Anyway..nice to be back :o) My problem is this..my brake lights wont go off..even with the key out of the ignition !The only way I can get them to go off is by disconnecting the battery. The LH one is always much brighter than the RH one..and if you look at them both you can see them flickering slightly. I thought it was something to do with the high level light but makes no difference when that is disconnected. Its fitted with the rear light clusters where most 4traks have a blanking plate, and the ones in the rear bumpers have been disconnected when these have been fitted. There have clearly been problems with the electrics in the past as a couple of the fuses in the fuse box have melted at some point and external fuses have been fitted. At 16 years old the wiring will obviously not be at its best..so there must be a bad earth somewhere..but electrics I just cant get my head round..is it a big job for an auto electrician to just cut the existing wires to the brake lights and rewire them ?? cos this is driving me mad !!Also...cold starting has recently been a problem..it will always fire up, but lots of blueish white smoke and ticks over really rough..almost feels as though it isnt firing on all cylinders..but after a few mins seems to stabilise and all is tickety boo ! Love B16 4 TRK to bits..but she can really frustrate me sometimes !!I could do with someone local to the NW who,s good with electrics :o)Cheers for now folks. Colin
firstly
change your glow plugs- starting should then be solved, secondly your lights.....you have by the sounds of it one little connection somewhere in the circuitery making a loop, my experience of fourtraks - clean the whole electrical area on the light stalk which to doo right involves wrenching of the steering wheel, the other famous place to look is the plastic connection blocks behind the wheel arch areas as they can go very bad.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Thanks for the quick
Thanks for the quick response..never actually thought of the light stalk..so worth a try.I must admit that the wiring at the back doesnt look too clever..theres a big taped up length kinda tucked behind the rear bumper, visible between the two bumpers sort of resting on the tow bar when not tucked away !!Will also look behind the wheel arch ( i,m assuming I have to remove the interior panel inside to get to it
)Mind you...dont really know what i,m looking for ! but anything is a help. Thanks also for the glow plug advice,I thought that may be the first thing to try..so will log into ebay and gets me some NGK plugs and hope the old ones come out without too much drama !Dont want to start spending money on suspension/tyre mods until i have the basics sorted.Cheers for now.Colin
My 4 trak is ALMOST as much fun as my bike !
Check your brake light switch
Check your brake light switch as this could be stuck in the on position.
oh hang on
like a dumbass I misread that, I was thinking rear lights not brake lights durrrrr ignore me.....yer assasins possibly right with sticky switch on peddle.....

first off you need to get
first off you need to get hold of a workshop manual with wiring diagrams... on my f reg some of the rear lights have whats known as a switched earth... power goes direct to the light then to the switch and then to earth..... so a worn bit on the wire from the light to the switch , shorting on the body results in the light on all the time whatever you do with the switch. on mine the wires from the rear lights dive underneath then up over the diesel tank and on to a connector under the carpet just inside the passenger door near the rear of the seat. i think mine have chaffed somewhere above the diesel tank and ive run new wires back from the connecter by the passenger seat to the rear lights.
i got a cd manual off fleabay that has wiring diagrams which helped identify what wires went where
