hey guys, happy new year to all!, wondered if some wise man/lady could help me out on this one,......
i recently went up the motorway with my fourtrak and decided that blue xenon lights are a bitch when your driving towards them so...... i wondered what it would be like to drive WITH them, i was told theyre great so i bought a set on good old Ebay and fitted them, i checked the ebay listing and it said compatable with dihatsu fourtrak 1988-1993 which is what my track is as its a Kreg.
but after 5 mins of going up a busy dual carriageway..... BANG! off go the lights! no fronts at all! swiftly i turned into a layby after having numerouse horns beeped etc to find that once i had stopped and started the engine again one light worked well on dipped but the other was dim, when i put it on main beam the dim one went out and the bright one went on main beam!
any ideas?? im off to carlisle this weekend so ideas before then would be ace!

Much the same thing happened to mine a few weeks back when hauling my trailer back up from Mid Wales to Manchester..no fun ! I thought it was something to do with the trailer hook up..but changed the fuse and all was well...for about 10 miles..then could smell burning coming from the other side of the passenger seat !!Blooming wiring was melting !! so had to disconnect the neg terminal from the battery to stop the truck becoming a statistic ! After a while,reconnected the battery changed the fuse again and all has been ok since ( fingers crossed)Hopefully yours is a bit simpler, and a fuse may just do it, I also have xenon gas bulbs in mine, but have had for months.Good luck buddy..hope all is sorted before the trip to Carlisle ! thankyou for your help, i havnt checked the fuse as i kinda thought nothing would work with a blown fuse? mayby the fuse is too small to take the load?,
come to think about it i DID smell a rather electrically smell just before it blew.... its odd though how one is dim then one is bright etc! thought it was a earthing fault so have ripped all the stupid snap clips that were put on ~ off and then soldered and covered with heat shrink to make a proper join..... after burning my hands a few times i tried the lights and now only ONE of the flippin things works! gah! will check fuses now and see.

I`ve come to the conclusion
I`ve come to the conclusion Steve that we must love our 4traks a lot !I sold my first independent a few years back, but kept the Reg No on retention ( B16 4 TRK)as deep down I knew i,d be back for more at some point in life ! Much as I love driving it, I havent a clue when it comes to things electrical..or mechanical for that matter ! so have always found the site invaluable.My own electrics are shocking..at some stage before I got it,a couple of the fuses have melted in the fuse box,so have about 4 extarnal fuses attatched to the fuse box..with disconnected wires everywhere,from a previous alarm system and god knows what else..every now and then my brake lights just dont go off..even without the ignition key in..and as for the big clump of wires under the carpet next to the passenger door.....jeees. What I really need is a good auto electrician to systematically rewire the main electrics,as I reckon that after a while ( mines a 96 )the wiring just starts to corrode away. Best of luck mate..just about to go out now and fit a new set of glow plugs as I think that explains the recent bad starting on the cold mornings..so fingers crossed it doesnt lead to anything more !!

true love only grows fonder! erm ive decided to rip out all light wires going to the bow of the truck and start again... im in the same boat as you whear i have wires everywhear but if ground to earth they spark!!! fire hazzard waiting to happen!.
ive ordered the fuse box and new wire so here goes! your right about the wiring though as mine is black on the copper through all the origional wiring so a bugger to solder, ive had to botch the left hand headlight for now!

Damn..pity you`re up there in the "Fatherland" !! You could have come and done mine as well !!!! I reckon its the only way to do it,as there has to come a point when ALL the wiring starts to fail. My added problem is I tow a trailer so have the added complications of have the towbar electrics as well ! and my worst nightmare is the feckin truck bursting into flames with my trailer attached and all my stock on the way to a show !! Must have a word with an auto electrician and get a price to rewire the old boy. Cheers for now.Colin

nice!, it was the fuse on mine! somthing so simple! lol, it was soooo fried that it was siezed in! have a new fuse in now and smaller wattage bulbs and its all cool. bloody ebay! lol still going to do the whole overhaul of my wiring though! cant believe its soooo dad!

Youve got a fuse gone and you wanna get them bulbs out, repackage them then resell on ebay, yes they will fit fourtrak, no the lighting wiring system cant handle the wattage required, I bet if you strip back some lighting cables there black copper corroded burnt, rather than golden brown shiny, this is age, but you just cant use high consumption bulbs in a system its not designed for, thats ebay for you.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
