WHICH GLOW PLUG ?!

Forum:

Nothing is simple with a Frickin 4Trak !!Following on from my bad cold starting and the much appreciated advice, I ordered a set of NGK plugs, and going off the NGK website I needed a set of Y-146R 7v plugs, which I duly ordered. All new to me is this ! so got the nose of the truck into my garage and set about removing the old ones..which certainly looked like they could do with changing ( trying to work out how to upload a pic..it,ll probably end up in the image gallery )but the problem is this..when I inserted the new plug..I tightened it as far as I could by hand..then got the spanner on it to tighten it properly, but as I didnt want to risk overtightening and at worse, snapping it in the hole,I noticed that about one third of the thread was still visible Unknw so then held the old one next to the new,and although the thread diameter is identical, the new one has about a third more thread ?? Am trying to contact the company I bought them from, but dont want to risk leaving them with so much thread showing, even though I know that the same amount of plug is in as the old one. Does anyone know the exact plug I need Unknw As for the old ones, all were pretty manky looking, but have put them back in having cleaned the ends up to remove the carbon, but one in particular has what looks like a hard deposit of carbon stuck to it.I wont know till the morning when I start her up cold whether simply cleaning them will have made much difference, but also cleaned all the connectors on the strap thingy that connects them together..sorry for the lack of Technical jargon !!

as long

As long as the same amount of length is in the engine, plugs tightened (slight smear of copper grease) you can have as much thread showing as you please, wouldnt bother me one bit.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Look OK to me

I've had a look at photos ( Old & New Glow plugs....thread is different ?! ) - the new ones look fine - it's the chamfered edge (about 1" down from tip) that provides the gas seal.

All the glow plugs (Unipart / NGK) I've replaced on my diesel Felica have thread exposed.

having a cold start problem with my Trak. Not sure what the culprit is, but reckon it is either the starter motor or glow plugs.

Is it relatively easy to change the glow plugs?

Hi Windy )A couple of weeks

Hi Windy :o)A couple of weeks ago I would have been asking how easy a job it was !but thanks to the folks on here..it is !Just undo the 4 nuts holding the metal strip that connects the 4 plugs.Carefully remove the strip..mine was actually in 2 halves ( I say carefully as its a pretty thin strip and I could imagine it could break if too heavy handed)Then once the strip is removed and put to one side, simply undo each plug with ( I think I used a 10mm open ended spanner)and hey presto.Putting my new ones in tommorrow. Thanks to the help from everyone on this one..bit by bit i,ll learn !!

Glowplugs.

In the pursuit of profit and keeping down prices manufacturers will try and reduce the number of part numbers that they have to make to cover all the vehicles out there. If they can make a part fit two applications, instead of one, by extending the thread a bit they would be mad not to do so. The extra thread isnt doing any harm and as you say the same number of threads are in the head , so thats OK.

Cleaning the plugs isnt really going to make much difference, but you can easily check them with a piece of wire and the vehicle battery. Hold the wire on the positive the heater plug hex on the negative and touch the wire on the terminal . It will spark a bit but after about ten seconds the end of the heater plug will glow red hot, if it doesnt its a duff one. Be careful here you can easily burn yourself badly if you hold or touch the end!

My guess is that one or two have packed up.

Thanks for that Steve..I juts

Thanks for that Steve..I juts wanted to be sure before fitting them, which I got round to doing today, and what a difference !Smeared a bit of copper grease on the thread as recommended by someone else and all done & dusted.Clearly I`m not mechanically minded !and whilst I can understand the difference one or two plugs will make to the actual starting of the engine, once its actually fired up and running, I assumed then that the plugs would make no difference to the way the engine was running/ticking over Unknw but even THAT seems to be much smoother. Going to change the oil/filters etc this week which will also help, have to admit, used to stick religiously to an oil/filter change every 3000 miles, but it must be close on 5k now..so overdue. Also..is there anything can be done to the injectors to make sure they are running as they should Unknw Just want to make sure i,m getting the best out of the old guy..he doesnt yet have 100k on the clock, so will serve me well if I look after him. Thanks again..much appreciated.
