Forum:
please note that i have read the how it works thread, however, that (to me) is just the basic knowledge anyone using a 4x4 should know!
im just after a bit of information please...
my 4wd isnt working, i only have rwd, the gearbox switches over to 4wd and the green light comes on, but no drive to front wheels... i have auto locking hubs.
could anyone help me check it by telling me what to check for to see which part is broken, ie transfer box, diff, half shafts or hubs.
any help much appreciated... ideally telling me what the front driveshaft does whilst in 2wd and also in 4wd. also, if i remove the front driveshaft, grab the front diff, with the front end jacked up, will it spin the front wheels?
thanks in advance
When in 2WD the rear
When in 2WD the rear propshaft turns, but not the front propshaft. When in 4WD both the front and rear propshafts turn.
When 4WD is engaged it moves a splined sleeve across the two shafts in the transfer case to connect them together as one unit.
Which type of box do you have fitted? if its the type with 2/4WD on the stick it could be the selector forks.
If you have the vacuum type selector then it could be the solonoids which operate a diagphram to suck or blow, this movement engages the sleeve over the front propshaft.
Usually its the front auto hubs not working, many neglect them and they fill with wet and mud, this either corrodes them or blocks them so tightely they won't work.
Get the vehicle off the ground and onto four axle stands so all the wheels are in the air. Start the engine and select 4H and select first gear and let the clutch out, does the front propshaft turn? if so its not the transfer case.
If its an independent model with IFS you can also see if the front driveshafts are turning, this eliminates the diff if they are, and shows a diff problem if they are not.
With a solid axled model you will have to remove the front wheels and auto hubs, you will see the splined halfshafts protruding, if they turn its not the diff, but the auto hubs, if they don't turn its the diff.
Right, when in 4wd, the front
Right, when in 4wd, the front prop is solid, so gearbox all ok, what's the easiest way of checking fronts? I've got a pair of manual locking hubs spare, and a diff etc, what part of the hubs needs to be removed to change them over?
lift the front wheel of
lift the front wheel of ground, you have auto hubs fitted yes, neutral on gearbox, turn front prop, auto hubs should click n engage, its all on my post about what is connected to what.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

If you have a front prop thats stationary with 4H engaged its one of two things, the valves on the side of the gearbox, there are two on a plate, and their pipework.
Issue two could be the diagphram, look on the front flange of the transfer case behind the vacuum solonoid plate and you will see a round plate, the pipe from the solonoid valves goes to it, and it has a switch in the centre.
Pull the vacuum pipe off and put your finger over it, get an assistant to engage 4H, then disengage it, and it will suck or blow; if it dosent its the vacuum solonoids.
If it does its most likely the diagphram, remove the vacuum pipe and wiring from the switch, undo the plate and remove it, in the centre of the diagphram is an adjustment bolt, pull and push this and it should move freely. If not is it full of dirt or corrosion? clean it and abrade with 1200 grit wet and dry and a little light oil, wipe it clean and apply a little silicone grease to the bore in which it sits.
suck or blow = wrong have you
suck or blow = wrong
have you ever had one and played with that bit??
i would say no you have not as you would know that it does not blow.
on that bit you have said is 2 vac pipes, one on the front bit so it will suck the diapharm out to select 4wd and one on the top behinde the cover to suck the diapharm back to select 2wd.
the way i would test the 4wd system is
start the truck and press the 4wd button or select 4wd on the t box then drive forward 50yards then stop and get under the truck and see if you can turn the front prop,if you cant then the t box is working fine.
if thats all good then press the 4wd button again or take it out of 4wd on the t box then drive forward 50 yards then switch it off and get under the truck again and twist the ofs drive shaft,if this just spins then the front osf auto hub is broke, then try turning the nsf drive shaft,if that just spins then the nsf auto hub is broke.
if one of the hubs is broke but the other is fine you will lose all the front drive to the side that is broke as they have a open front diff so all the power will go to the side that has the least resistance
has any body priced these
has any body priced these solenoid valves of daihatsu, having problems with my valves ,any body found similar ones on a motor at the scrappys ,thanks ian
