Forum:
Hi everyone,
Great to have found this place.
Can anyone help me please?
I am looking to buy a fourtrak asap. I have a horse and need to get along the tracks in bad weather and need room for saddle etc.
I originally wanted a landrover defender but have had alot of good advice about the fourtrak. I am a female however and not alot of experience in buying cars and know some blokes can take the mickey a bit as we dont know enough to know a good bargain.
I wondered if anyone can give me advice about what are the typical problems with a fourtrak (im looking to buy an older one that's done about 100-130k miles.)
Thanks in advance for any advice on what to avoid and what to look for!
I dont mind if it needs a little work but need to know what the weak points that tend to go the most so I can look at those areas.
Thank you so much!
A Good Choice !!
Hi..and welcome to the site :o)Very surprised that 3 days have passed and no.one else has responded..most unusual ! Dont worry about the lack of knowledge..you,ll see from my posts that I know not a lot about 4 traks mechanically, but just know I love em..on my second one. There are just a few things which I have learned..bodily..check the floor under the rear passenger footwells and the boot floor..they tend to rot..also,under the wheel arches, which if you go for an Independent like mine, the flared outer wheel arch can hide a multitude of sins..now more importantly, and this can be an expensive job as I discovered. Under the truck, running a few inches above the rear axle is a cross member which is a bit of an achiles heel and as I found out after investigating a loud clunking noise..is prone to corroding at each end..so if nothing else, check that out.Mechanically they are bulletproof if they have been well maintained, but like any vehicle..every component has a lifespan. I use mine to pull a large box trailer for my business and the last 18 months have seen me and the fourtrak haul the trailer from Manchester to Brighton twice..Aviemore..mid wales a few times.in fact all over the place, and apart from a new clutch and the crossmember..its been faultless..yes..i,d love a Land rover 110..but reckon i,ll never sell the old fella ! Just take some time to read through the many posts..theres a whole lot of experience on here..and a bunch of nice guys to boot..good luck..lots on ebay.Colin
My 4 trak is ALMOST as much fun as my bike !
Thanks so much! You're the

4-Trak
We've had a few 4x4s and now we have two 4-traks, one as spares (it got to rusty to repair), they are great jeeps BUT they are made from kit kat wrapping, rust and more rust is the problem, try to find one where there is little rust and if you buy it treat the rust first before any mechanical problems, be very careful of the independents (better drive that the ones with springs) but they rust UNDER the wheel arch extensions.
Happy hunting and happy driving when you get one.

hi again!
steve again!, just to say that i agree with colin on this one about the wheel arches, i just went outside the other day (amidst my recovery of flu!) and attempted to rust proof my wheel arch.... it was worse than i had previously thought, i had left it too long, it is VITAL that you check these areas and treat them as soon as there is a sign of rust... ive now learned the hard way and will need to do a wee patch up job on them arches!.
BUT having said all that, i love my trak even if its 20 year old! it may not see ME out as im only 26! but ill definatly see IT out!
