fuel gauge reading empty

Forum:

hi again can anyone tell me how to be 100% sure my problem is the sender unit on my sportrak that couses fuel gauge to read empty.
the temp gauge works ok so that eliminates the power supply.
just need to know if there is anyway of checking either sender unit or the gauge (WITHOUT REMOVING THEM) i.e. should there be a spesific resistance across the connecting wires to the sender unit. and if i dissconnect the two wires from the harness to the sender then connect them to each other (thus shorting them out) should that make the gauge read full.
just want to be sure as its not looking like an easy job to change sender unit.

any advice will be apreiciated
cheers fred

its not that bad a job unless

its not that bad a job unless its a rotbox underneath.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

fuel gauge reading empty

dont supose it will be a nightmare but i am limited to working on my drive using a jack and a set of ramps. i know that i can change it but seems a little silly to just change the sender unit then find out thats not what it is. what i want to know if possible is any checks i can do before going ahead.
e.g. can i check the rest of the wiring loom and the sender unit by bypassing the sender unit. meby even connect another sender unit to the wires from origional one. or if i connect the wires from sender unit together will that make the gauge go to full or not. or can i check the sender unit is working or not by the resistance reading it should have. ext. ext. ext.

if you trace the wires to it,

if you trace the wires to it, cut n splice then add another sender for testing yes...can doo that.

fuel guage.

The gauge didn't work so I removed my sender unit and it appeared to be fine( minimal resistance at full, some resistance when empty). Still didn't work, so I renewed some connectors and now it reads 1/4 when its full. I think ( on mine anyway) a stupid bad connection in the wiring that I can't find is adding resistance to the circuit , so gets a false reading . Good luck.

fuel gauge up date!!

just an up date on my problem with fuel gauge!! i attatched a seperate fuel gauge (from a totaly different car) via a battery pack when it was connected direct to battery pack it read full. i attatched it via battery pack and included my existing sender unit in series and it read 3/4 full so i pressume the sender unit is ok. i have ordered a s/hand speedo pod (inc fuel gauge) from e.bay so when it arrives i will try that and let you know what happens. if that dosnt fix it must be a wiring problem so might just rig up a seperate gauge (if i can)
if anyone has any ideas of where common faults occur in harness can you let me know please. cheers fred
