Forum:
sorry to be a pain but just about to put the cylinder head back on after new valves etc and think after its overheating problem its best to change thermostat.
it is a 1990 model, where sell the correct thermostat? as i read some are short and some are long reach
this is what was fitted , is this the correct type it only opens at 95'C
Always, for what they cost
Always, for what they cost its a geed preventative measure.
Good even.

Long reach.
If you fit a short rather than a long reach, the short thermostat does not open soon enough. The coolant over heats. The longer thermosat does what it say .... it reaches further into the cylinder head where the coolant reaches to heat the wax spring so the thermostat opens at the correct temperature.
This is why some new owners who buy a Sporty discover it overheats. The previous owner replaced with a cheaper shorter conventional thermostat and the coolant subsequently overheats.
You might need to phone your engine number and check with daihatsu which thermostat is needed for your Sporty. A good DIY motor shop will hold catalogues to tell you which thermostat is needed for your daihatsu. Try Halfords and view their catalogue of thermostats.
£23
i just got quoted £23 , does that sound right
its a local car shop as in guernsey where i live there are no halfords etc.

For what it's worth....
Go to milners... I got a cheap jobby which I'm now 100% sure is too small after reading Mace's post and over heating after driving around a small housing estate kerb crawling for 15 mins looking at houses for sale I can tell you it's not worth it. It also over heats badly on 10 miles to work, and as I've had explained to me it's the Stat (Thanks Assassin) Took me an hour to get home because I didn't have the right size socket and couldn't remove it.
I've removed it and I can drive it fine now. Tho Fuel consumption is very low. She's a bit abused, so is a bit poor anyway.
Just don't order it before I do cos I want it in stock!
