twisted chasis!!!??

Forum:

hi guys,

my wife took my trak to the wheel place today to get wheels aligned..... they said the back drivers side wheel was out of sync, the guy said it was a twisted chassis?? he did it with a laser thingy.... im convinced it would take a hell of alot more than what ive done to it to get the chassis twisted do you not think?? could it be bushes or somthing else??? hope its not twisted as this means scrappy for my beloved trak....

steve

suspension

cos the vehicle is axles connected by leaf springs, check all that out first, make sure the bolt for the springs is not missing or sheared and that its in the locater hole for the chassis, have you noticed it crab at all when you let go of the steering wheel steve??

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

hmmmm

aie the steering goes off to the left i think.... crab?? i guess thats what it is?? lol im a tad worried as i love my trak dearly! it does go left sometimes then not others..... ill check suspension tommorow.... could it be a twisted chassis?? i thought youd have to really thwack it for it to twist! i mean i dont want to swear but defenders twist their chassis so much when offroading that the rear door dosent open ive been told! theres alot of spring in them??.

It is unlikely to be a

It is unlikely to be a twisted chassis, but not impossible, these will not twist in normal offroading and if it is twisted the most likely scenario is a heavy accident and the vehicles been badly repaired.

What would cause the chassis to twist:

The most likely cause apart from accident damage is corrosion, if it is excessively corroded the metal will become thin and lose its strength and it can twist in heavy off road use. Most likely places for corrosion are the internals of the chassis sections, so you need to check the chassis thickness.
To do this i would suggest using a small hammer and work along the length and tap it, any change of tone may indicate a thin or thinner area. If you have access to an airline you can blow down the inside of the chassis members and see what comes out, if corrosion and lumps of metal come out it is another indicator of corrosion.

It is more likely that it has some, or excessive suspension movement, if its leaf sprung begin by checking the springs, mountings, and bushes and bolts. If its coil sprung check the end of a coil has not snapped off.

ace

thank you very much!, i will check all this on my days off.... its good news though.... tipping it over wouldnt twist it though surely?.

Not normally, but if the body

Not normally, but if the body is deformed and stressed it could pull the chassis out of alignment, but again its unlikely. It would tear the body mounting rubbers first, and undoubtedly show many other symptoms such as badly shutting doors or the window glass popping out of their rubbers.

aye

tis what i thought, ive just gone under her today to change gearbox oil and chassis is in no way rotted anywhear, ive had the hammer out and no signs of thinning. can i put my used gearbox oil inside my chsassis by the way?

yer course ya can, but

yer course ya can, but everyone will see where youv'e been lol, very eco freindly.......anyway, steve.....check the leaf springs bolt is in the locater on the axle...if its sheared the leafs can slide n move about, this could of occured when you ditched it, its happened to me bud, also snapped leafs, if the axles out bud its the suspension.
