YRV mot fail

Forum:

Hi all. Taken the YRV for an MOT today and it failed on 1 thing. The ABS lamp on the dash does not light up. For as long as I have had the car it has never illuminated. The ABS is working but no lamp. I have taken the speedo unit out today to see if it is a bulb gone but no its a diode that is on the PCB so I need a new or second hand unit to fit. Can anyone help with this or is this a common fault that I can get fixed.

Regards Neil.

First off sorry to hear this.

First off sorry to hear this. Mine nearly failed it's last one on sill rust Sad

Funnily enough I have had the dash out on my the other day because the engine management light wasn't working, only to find the surface mounted led was hanging off at one end. In the end soldered in a standard red LED bulb (which can be had from e-bay for pennies) with the end cut to size. Now have the light working again. Easy enough job with a soldering iron and a replacement led for a circuit board, obviously made sure that the + and - were put in the right way round. If you look behind each surface mounted LED they have there own surface mounted resisitor.

As everyone is now aware it's now an M.O.T fail to not have any of the lights on your dash working, therefore had no choice but to fix myself. Smile

Advisories at the moment,

Advisories at the moment for the newly added bulbs, Fails for these start on April 1st.

Many thanks to all . It

Many thanks to all . It turned out that it was just a dry joint . Just re soldered both ends before I changed it and am now the proud owner of a bit of paper with pass written on it . Thanks to all again

Glad you got it sorted

I believe so. The one I

I believe so. The one I replaced it with is a bog standard none suraface mounted LED, I.E those bulb shaped ones, shines brighter as well Smile

LEDs

Bit rusty in my old age, but if my memory serves me right LEDs as we know them are fundamentally the same.

Thus you should be able to just change an LED in its existing circuit as Jon did below. They don't work and wouldn't be damaged if you put them in the wrong way round in a 12V system.

A bit more about them -

Their brightness depends on the current flowing through them. The usual aiming point in a design is about 10mA. The current is limited to this by an added series resistor or by circuitry. Directly across a 12V supply you would use a series resistor of 1.2K.

Some LEDs are supplied with a resistor included. In that case the resistor would determine the voltage across which they can be fitted and the device would be sold as say a '12V LED'

They develop about 0.5V voltage drop across them when operating.
