Fourtrak 4/2WD vacuum line routing

Forum:

Hi,
Just got my first ever 4x4 and Daihatsu (1988 Fourtrak DL-51 engine).

One of the obvious problems I've noticed is that in the past someone has detached (or cut) the two vacuum lines that come from the 4/2 wheel-drive selector, where they enter the engine bay!

I cannot see what or where they are supposed to connect to - can anyone send or point me to a picture of where they normally go please?

Thanks

not being cheeky or

not being cheeky or anything....are you definitely sure thats what they are and you have no 4H???

Yeah, pretty sure - I

Yeah, pretty sure - I followed them up from the top of the transfer box into the engine bay where they just ended (attached to nothing)...

did they end up behind the

did they end up behind the air filter box? and or engine and are they kinda transparent pipes?

breather pipes?

I think I know where you are heading (after thinking about it today) - are they breather/vent pipes from the transfer box? I noticed there was one coming up from the front diff into the engine bay.

Even if so, my original question still stands; where is the vacuum lines(s) from the engine to the transfer box?

lol, yep thats where im

lol, yep thats where im heading, vacuum systems come off the alternator, so I take it you have no 4wd?? even in 4L?? what type of transfer box do you have then? got a 4H button on the dash??

Yeah, got the 4wd button on

Yeah, got the 4wd button on the dash, but no 4wd at the wheels.
With the engine off, I can hear a tiny little 'clunk' under the car when I push the button which would seem to say at least one solenoid is working...
Is there a standard fault finding procedure for the transfer box selector?

if you have a pipe of the

if you have a pipe of the alternator going to the transfer box (think) then thats the vacuum pipe, with vehicle running n underneath, pulling of pipes to the box youll soon see if its sucking or not, if you have no 4wd or rather no 4wd low- you have a mechanical issue. www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/node/14281

Vacuum seems ok

On the plus side:
I DO have vacuum down at the transfer box, and at least one of the solenoids is working as I can hear a click from it when I press the 4wd high button with then engine off (but I'm woking on my own so cannot get under the car at the same time to feel which one or if it is both).

But:
I am not getting 4wd in low or high.

I'm guessing it will be that only one of the vacuum solenoids is working or the vacuum/diaphram driven rod is seized.
Looks an absolute PITA to get to, but I supose I am going to have to expose the rod/diaphram to check they are in tack and free to move respectively.

please read that link I

please read that link I posted above, if you have no 4wd low, it wont have anything to do with vacuum system !!! its a mechanical issue, believe me....read that link please, it explains what goes to what, and hopefully youll find the answer by diagnosis, issues will be from 1.transfer box, 2.prop shaft, 3. front differential, 4.half shafts, 5. cv joints, 6. locking hubs.

Thanks for your help, and I

Thanks for your help, and I did read the other post.
But, I've also read General Information, Section 11-2 of the 'F70, F75, F77 Service Manual'. It seems to say that the 'low switch' senses when you have manually selected low ratio and that then activates the solenoids (VSV No.2 = OFF) to engage 4wd. There is no mention of any manual linkage to select 4wd.
Maybe I'm reading the Service Manual wrong or it just does not mention the mechanical linkages because they were so impressed with their vacuum system...

But, you obviously know a lot more about this than a newbie like me...

nope your right in what you

nope your right in what you are saying,if the vaccum solenoids are not working you wont have 4wd but have you looked at the prop/diff/shafts and hubs just to make sure there not the problem??

also it can be the daiphram in the t box that is stuck so the solenids may be working but the vaccum can not move the daiphram as its stuck

I doo apologise, didnt

I doo apologise, didnt realise 4wd low was connected via the solonoid too....i was wrong...

FIXED - I have 4wd

All working well now that I have bypassed the vacuum solenoids and position switches.

See thread 16383 for details.
