2/4 wd solenoids bypass

Forum:

Can anyone see any major problems

with this potential mod/simplification:

1. Bring two vacuum pipes up into the cabin from the A and B chambers of the 2/4 wd vacuum selector on the transfer box.
2. Bring the vacuum line that supplies the A/B chambers with vacuum up into the cabin.
3. Done!

Now if you want 2 or 4 wd, just stop and plug the vacuum supply line onto the relevant A or B chamber line. The A/B line not used will be open to atmosphere.

This cuts out those pesky solenoids (which I suspect are the cause of my lack of 4 wd) and gives total control over when you have 2 or 4 wd i.e. you can have 2 wd low ratio.

why not just fix the solonoid

why not just fix the solonoid issue? tbh its easier just to change out the transfer box to the more reliable manual selector version.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

no go

easyest and cheapest option is to buy the manual selector forks and leaver split the transfer box take the old selectors out and put the new ones in reasemble box and your away just done it to mine if not my friend is breaking two fourtracks

up to my head in dirt and still digging

Blimey, my idea of cheap and simple must be a bit different! I was thinking of a metre or so of vacuum hose and a Stanley knife, not ripping transfer boxes out and apart.

I agree about the manual selector being better and that is what I would prefer (I got the Fourtrak because it was 'agricultural'); but, I'm stuck with what I've got. So, if I can cut out some of the unnecessary electrics*, all the better.

*e.g. a sensor switch and two solenoids to get 4wd in low ratio

It works!

In answer to my own original post; there is no problem with bypassing all the vacuum solenoids and switches - I now have 4wd on demand Smile

I didn't even need to buy any parts, I reused the vent/breather hose from the 2/4wd selector and the two 3-way vacuum connections to rig the new simple system.
