ongoing hijet noise saga

thanks all for v helpful comments last time about my tappets, took your advice and now my 'friendly' local mechanic is warbling on about 'timing belts' (wassat??) and the need to have it tightened or changed or something as well as/instead of doing something to the valve things. boy, am i really confused now? is this true, or am i being taken for another ride? van seems fine apart from the noise!! any further comments gratefully received, thanks juliana

First up, forget your freindly mechanic and find a new garage, one with membership of an official trade body (Ask your local trading standards about this), then go along and book it - yes, get an appointment - in for their opinion. If you decide on using them, get some kind of written estimate.

A damn good service may be all it needs.

Now, timing belts do have to be changed at certain intervals, and this differs from vehicle to vehicle, so we need to know what the gap is for a Hi-Jet, so if no-one on here knows, ring the local Daihatsu dealer. He may be wanting to change it too soon and forcing an unneccesary cost on you.

For what its worth, my local Daihatsu dealer has a notice stuck up on the wall saying ---all daihatsu timing belts to be changed every 60,000 miles
