Daihatsu YRV TURBO Build

Forum:

As a new member and now owning the car for nearly a month I thought I would start a build thread.
The car was bought as a run about as I am a truck driver and have too much to carry on my Honda VFR800 and due to the wife having a round trip of 70mile a day for work, she has the Seat Ibiza FR 2.0TDI CR.

Just a couple of shots of the car before I start.

Right. Well, the day I got the car I filled her up with V-POWER (the only fuel I feed any of the machines we own) and decided to service the car. I flushed the engine and changed the oil and filter. I then decided to check and tighten the alternator belt and to get to the tensioner pulley I had to remove the air box (would have checked the filter anyway). The first thing I noticed that was wrong was the OE filter had been hacked up and meshed over so I needed to replace this before driving any further. I then noticed that the adjustment bolt on the tensioner pulley was missing, I thought I could just fit another one but on further inspection it had been snapped off at the pulley. I have yet to do this job as the pulley is going to be nearly £80 from the dealers. The previous owner must have been a right tool!
Anyway, I decided to replace the OE filter with a cheap Hal-Frauds carbon cone filter as it was only £10 more than the OE filter (not including the cleaning/oiling kit). I left in the cold air feed side of the air box as an anchor point for the cone and as a cold air feed.

A few days later I then decided to see what I could do with the nasty dull alloys. I noticed the previous owner had painted them in grey (with a brush, LMAO). I decided to try and remove this and as I thought the paint was put on with no prep or primer. It came off pretty easy with plenty of T-CUT and a few hours of elbow grease. The wheels are pretty corroded so thinking of changing to 16's at some point.

This was all I did for a couple of weeks but I already had a few Jobs in mind.
I then started to strip out the seats etc as the car is just a run about for me and weight saving is good for free performance and better mpg.

I started by just stripping out the rear seats.

A couple of days later I stripped the passenger seat out and the boot floor components

I left it at that and decided to paint the Turbo components in black high heat enamel to blend in. Also they had brown paint on them, WHY???

Before

After

Easter Monday I decided to strip out the rest of the interior.

I have now removed the rear door speakers and orange plastic. I have also moved the wiring loom parts and taped them down with silver gaffer tape for protection and it also looks better too.

I still have to replace the alternator belt and tensioner pulley but I am going to wait and get a water pump and do a coolant change at the same time.
Brakes are yet to be painted too.

Nice work When you say build

Nice work Smile

When you say build work, what are you actually building up on the car? Are you planning to put roll bars in etc.. to make it a track car?

I remember the work I put in just to change the front seats by myself, and it was hard work to get what I wanted to achieve.

As for the painting in the engine bay, was that painted by brush? And what paint did you use?

Interesting to see what these cars look like gutted.

I am use to other OC's using

I am use to other OC's using build threads as just 1 thread where you post all your mods, whatever they are over the time of ownership of the vehicle instead of many threads on one car but yeah, might build my own when I get myself a MIG welder. Maybe gonna put a fixed bucket seat and harness in too but don't know, might be putting it all back in and leaving it, a thought I had a few mins ago. I aint really wanting to put too much money into the car as it is only a run about but I do change my mind far too much so will see.
Yeah I just used a brush to paint the heat shield, did the drums the same today.

If ya wondering why I aint painted the centre, Its just cos I didn't see the point of painting a part that's completely covered.

Okay just a good old mod on

Okay just a good old mod on the fly routine Wink Like what I do Smile

While you have the car in the air, like you do, I would check the sills under the sport sills for rust. Mine got bad that it nearly failed an MOT and paid out to get them sorted as they were rotting Sad also check the rear underneath anti-roll bar is in good nick as well as the original brackets can snap, one of mine did but luckily managed to get an upgraded ones off Daihatsu Dave Smile
As well as the exhaust condition, as these too a prone to rot away as well. Both were covered by Warranty replacementments.

Stands

Went down and got a few bits from the lock up yesterday. Got my axle stands (was wondering where they were) so going to get the car on em and have a good look. I don't get under or into owt if it's not supported right. Had a few close shaves in my daft younger days. Smile

good job

looks like your fun is starting, keep us posted

The fickle feller!

Cheers but I have decided not to bother doing anything but keep up to the car mechanically, even thinking about putting the original air box back in.
I Have already put all the interior back in, I actually prefer it like that.

I am looking at buying a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR FQ360 (Manual, not SST) at some point (would prefer the FQ400 but they are costly so would have to wait a bit longer, maybe???) and giving the YRV car to my sister as a 2nd car and the wife is in agreement for a change. We are keeping the FR TDI CR for a long, long while as she does huge mileage for work. I have the Honda VFR800 VTEC for fun too so standard the YRV will remain.

Cheers to everyone for the reply's and I am not finished with the car yet, just finished with the mod's, I think LOL

Just another shot of the YRV (& FR), maybe the last one, who knows, I am fickle.

Well don't get rid of the YRV

Well don't get rid of the YRV just yet. Had mine now for over 4 1/2 Years, use this more than my Scooby as it's; A).. Cheaper to run, B).. Nice all-rounder C).. Easiest car to work on. Okay getting aftermarket parts for it are a challenege, but you don't see many of them on the raod due to Daihatsu only importing 210 of them and with only 190 now on the road Smile

Not getting rid just yet.

I'm keeping hold of it for a bit yet, bike weather has come round again and my VFR is my mechanical love Smile

I am going to give the car to my sister, just going to get it spot on for her whilst I have it.
Tue, they are rare, I have only seen another one on the road.

Looking at the photo of the

Looking at the photo of the YRV, are the front fog lights been fitted correctly? The O/S looks to be different to the N/S one? Or is it just the photo?

Just the angle

I had a look and it's fine, must just be the strange angle of the shot.

Cheers for the heads up though.

nice DIY work

good job on the DIY, though not sure if its rust I start to see on the top of the strut towers. the small 1.3L turbocharged engine is very robust. over here we import half cut YRVs from Japan and put the engines in our cars (local derivates of the Sirion, Cuore/Move).. some of them have over 200,000km on the odo and still going strong. takes a lot of abuse as well, with upgraded fuel it does 1.2 bar easy. the stock ones do 1 bar with no engine management. Just take good care of the automatic transmission, ensuring you do timely ATF changes and if possible, install an aftermarket auxiliary ATF cooler - though not necessary if you do short trips and don't floor the pedal much.

I think the satisfaction is high with a small wagon-style car like this, it will easily lead an EVO or Impreza STi for the first 300 meters at the lights, and you can see a WTF look at their faces. It won't win a race or anything, but its truly fun zipping around and surprising people when they least expect it.

I got em to fit, No grinding!

I used 8mm spacers on the rear, only just enough left on the centre to fit right though and did not need spacers on the front, I got the Toyota wheel nuts too which were perfect as they sit that far into the wheel there was loads of thread so is safe. I put 195/45/16's on. The handling has improved massively. I love the look, it still says OE but freshens it up a lot.

Tinted 2!

I have now tinted the side repeaters and slightly tinted the rear lights, I like the side repeaters but I do not like the bronze of the rear lights and didn't wanna go any darker really, I might do just to see what it looks like and then remove it if I prefer them standard.

Looks good How much light is

Looks good Smile

How much light is being emitted out now that the tint is on for the back light clusters?

Have toiled with the idea of doing something with the chrome/mirror parts on the rears of mine to make them match the fronts.
