What to look out for when buying a Charade?

Forum:

Hi,

I'm looking for a new car. Am after something cheap, small and economical. One of my options in a Charade.

I am hoping to go look at one on Thursday, if it is still for sale. Its a 2004 (54 plate) EL. It has 78,000 mile on the clock.

What are the main things I should look for, and it the high mileage something I should be wary of and possibly avoid?

Cheers.

Clicking or clunking

Hi,

We had one for a while, the big issue with them is the front driveshafts which are one-piece. You cannot get outers only, and the full shafts are many hundreds of pounds. So when you testdrive, be sure to turn (on full lock) both ways and listen for clicking (normal test for worn outer cv). Also any clunky sounds when pulling away.

You will find that generally the gear change is very meaty. This is normal, and you get used to it. What there shouldn't be is excessive resistance on the clutch.

If you haven't driven one already, you will be pleasantly surprised at the nippiness of the car and it's acceleration for the small engine. Easy to rev up and enough power for motorway overtaking within reason. The BEST quality is the suspension. It just soaks up bumps/potholes in the road with ease, and the sound-proofing is very good, so you feel sometimes as if you are in a much more expensive car. Take time to check the aircon, it should blow very cold if working well.

If you go for the test and have any other concerns, feel free to post back...

Thanks for the swift reply, I

Thanks for the swift reply, I have read about the drive shaft issues. I don't think the car I'm looking at has air con fitted.

I think I am going to be pleasantly surprised by any car I buy, I own a classic mini which I am having to take of the road for a while for some engine work.

How are the engines for mileage? Will 78,000 be a problem?

Also how are they for working on, i.e servicing, timing belt, brakes etc?

Service History

Well, check the service history. The car actually specifies fully synthetic oil!
Ours was still getting 45-60mpg and had mileage of 96000!
I fitted iridium spark plugs and did some servicing myself, not sure about timing belt, we never had ours done while in our possession, so not sure about the cost. I also upgraded the brakes myself, to slotted discs and EBC brake pads, worked very well and they are easy to work on. Might be good to feel the wheels after testing it, brakes may be slightly seized if they weren't maintained properly. I dismantled ours
completely and found some corrosion and cleaned it up, changed a few little bits/rubbers and greased with Mintex ceratec and it worked perfectly. See this here: http://www.daihatsu-drivers.co.uk/node/13828
Hope that helps...
