Gearbox Problems

Hi

I have just started having trouble with my fourtrak. When i go up through the gears its fine but when i come back down i cant get it into 2nd.

Is this a common problem and does anybody know what i can do.

My 1994 tdx limited has same problem, i kind of have to force it into second when going from 3rd but is fine 1st to 2nd. No idea of problem so any help would be great

It is usually the mainshaft

It is usually the mainshaft nut in the transfer case, a simple repair with a 30mm spanner.

Look above where the rear propshaft exits the transfer case, above this is a cover plate which looks like a bra which is inclined at about 45 degrees, remove the six studs and you will see two mainshafts.

Use a 30mm spanner or 6 point socket onto the upper of the two nuts and tighten it as tight as you can, put a bar on for more power, stake the nut securely and ensure you do this properly as this is the one which comes loose as it is dimpled as a round dimple into a square groove on the shaft.

Takes about 15 minutes, and put a little sealant on the cover plate when you replace it.
