Lifting the Front of my FourTrak

Forum:

Hi Guys

I've just got myself a FourTrak J reg (91) and want to lift the front to match the rear.

Shes on leaf springs all round, There's 5 in the rear and 2 in the front. I've looked at ordering 5 leafs for the front but can only find 3. I have found 5 listed for rear(Milner off road i believe)

This may sound stupid but, If I ordered the rear leafs would they fit on the front? or can I order 5 front leafs or the equivalent from another site?

Thanks All
Phil

rear n front dont mix/fit,

rear n front dont mix/fit, just get heavy duty ones for lift only, not flex

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

In a word, NO. The rears are

In a word, NO. The rears are much more flexible then the fronts as the stiffer fronts are stiffer because of the weight of the engine is permanent. If you go for heavy duty items all round it will stiffen the ride without lifting the vehicle. On a leaf sprung model all you need is the longer spring shackles, remove them one at a time and replace them with the longer items and you will have the appropriate lift.

Two things to note though:

Don't do too much of a lift as the vehicle becomes unstable as the centre of gravity increases, and you can get bother with the propshafts working at extreme angles outside their designed working angles, this gives problems.

By lifting in this manner you don't increase the underaxle clearance, to do this you need taller tyres such as 31's to give additional underaxle clearance, but doing the two together gives good results.

If you want the vehicle predominantly offroad you want softer suspension, not harder, as softer suspension is more compliant and has much more flexibility over difficult terrain, and keeps the wheels in contact with the ground for longer. You do suffer slightly onroad though.

If the vehicle is to be used on and off road I would suggest a 2"-4" suspension lift and 31's as this gives acceptable all round results.

Thank you

Thanks to all for your advice and guidance!
