Charade Turbo

Forum:

Anyone know about GTti's. Have seen one for sale but it's just a Charade Turbo and has 5 doors ( I think GTti's have 3) and steel wheels. Came up as a Turbo when I put in the reg. for an insurance quote. Can't be a diesel as the picture of the engine bay shows a distributor cap.
Ideas?

Yes GTti's are my thing! You

Yes GTti's are my thing!

You are correct in that GTti is 3 door only.

There was a few 5 door Turbo "specials" sold in the UK, These had the engine from the previous generation of Charade, the CB61 single cam, 6 valve carburetor turbo. It's almost as if they created the model just to use up the old engines they had lying around! The 5 door turbos I have seen over the years have all been F reg.

They produce about 70-75bhp and they are not as strong as the GTti CB80 engine so can't be be tuned for more power as easily.

The GTti engine is much more advanced, 100bhp/95lbft standard, Twin cams, 12 valves, fuel injected, intercooled and with a bigger turbo, And the internals are very beefy. Power can be increased to well over 200bhp without uprating the internals.

There is a very active community on Facebook for the GTti.

Charade Turbo

It was an F reg, so that sounds right. Best give it a wide berth then! Tried to find out a bit more on the internet and it looks the same engine as a G11 (?) Charade - quite a pretty, square thing.
Is it the GTxx that's the same as the GTti, but with air-con? And did any of them ever make it over here, or come up for sale?
Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the facebook page - it's good to get a bit of research in before you dive into the unknown!!

Weary

Yes GTxx is pretty much

Yes GTxx is pretty much identical car to GTti, But will all the optional extras including air-con. And they had catalyts whereas the UK spec GTti's did not.

None were offically sold in UK, But Daihatsu UK did import 3, one of which "A12 GTX" was used by the managing director for a while. This car is still around having been recently restored.

If you are interested in looking for a GTti. The main thing to mention is RUST, RUST and more RUST!!

Underneath can rot so bad.

Any Mechanicals probs are easy to sort, spares are quite plentiful.
