YRV brake discs

Forum:

Being very sensitive to rusting brake discs and having fitted a pair of one-year-old Brembos for the May MoT, I notice that Brembo now claim to plate their discs for corrosion resistance.

In our search to escape rusting discs has anyone yet tried the latest Brembos or had notable long-term success with any other make of disc in this ambition?

Its worth a go Tony. I bought

Its worth a go Tony. I bought some D-Sport ones a few years back for the Turbo which claimed the same. Although there was surface rust aster a while it wasnt too bad.
Sounds like you may be the person to test this out for the community Wink

Plated Brembo discs

Well Jon, I'll almost certainly have to change discs again for next year's May Mot, so I may as well try the plated Brembos as they are a good price anyway - unless somebody knows better.

Plating sort of destroys the quick-stopping benefits of cast iron discs, but hey ho. Might as well use stainless to start with - and it would be truly rust-proof and not so quick stopping.

My rusting disc problem is exacerbated by my not using the car very often, giving rust a chance to build up too much before the next pad-scraping brake application.

Occasionally over the years I've been able to recover a pair of discs for the Mot by flat sanding them.

Funny that disc rusting doesn't plague my other more recent but not quite so little-used car!!!!!

Just take any disc do a local

You can just take any disc do a local elctroplaters and get them zinc plated.

Cost about £10.

Although the Brembos are not expensive.

Then you can also spray some silver / black heat proof paint on top of the zinc on the disc edge and hub area.

Zinc + heat

I don't think that plated disc manufacturers would use zinc as I believe something nasty happens if you heat zinc, as would happen with a zinc-plated brake disc.....or exhaust.
