YRV Turbo Auto having problems getting reverse Please Help.

Forum:

My wife has had a YRV about one year and a half and was running fine until the other day.
She went to park the car and selected reverse but it went forward.
When I got there someone had tried to push the car back in Natural but it was locked in a gear or maybe park.
We had to drag it back enough to bump it round to drive out of the car park.
it drove forward fine apart from 2 big clunks, when I got it home I tried Natural and reverse both worked fine.
Sometimes reverse clunks, have not tried it since.

Anyone had this or know what it could be?

Thanks Jason.

First thing to check does the

First thing to check does the auto box fluid look good? There is a dipstick situated on the passenger side in the engine bay behind the battery tray. You need to check this once the engine is warm, details in the owners handbook.

Secondly has the auto box fluid been changed? The problem us turbo owners have discovered is that the owners handbook mentions that the auto box fluid should be changed every 6 years, yet it's not in the service interval schedule, and the Daihatsu uk service/dealerships are not aware of this. Also there is an auto box filter which technically should also be changed, but again is not known by Daihatsu UK. The owners on this club are the only ones who have been made aware. Unfortunately if the auto box fluid is not serviced, then these issues can be known Sad
Luckily some of us have now changed our fluid. One thing that can also be a problem with the auto boxes is the dreaded flashing D issue when in drive. You maybe lucky and been given a warning sign of a low auto box fluid problem.

Changing the oil and filter

Unlikely changing the oil and filter will do anything to fix the problem you have. Sounds like something mechanical has failed, relating to the selector.

The gearboxes are pretty weak and not up to long term reliability, as have been designed for the 90bhp 1.3

This was my first thought but

This was my first thought but not having much xp with auto box I asked the question here.
Am going to change fluid today and see if that helps.
Is the selector someting that is cost effective to change or is recon box better option?

Thanks Jason.

Thanks for your reply

Fluid seems ok but old so maybe an oil change would help.
Is the filter inside the box? I can see a sump under the box is it in there?
No warning sign so far.

Thanks again.

Oil changed still not good

After changing the oil went on a test run got gearbox upto running temp.
checked level all ok but then it started again clunk in reverse it locks up the drive train untill you drive it forward enough to unlock it.
In reverse it doesn't always do it but when it does the hole car shakes as if the wheels are loss.
when it locks in reverse u can't push it backwards only forwards, all 4 forward gears change perfectly.

Any ideas guys?

When you say you changed the

When you say you changed the oil, how many times did you change it? As some on here who have done this say you should run a couple of changes through the system as you never get all of the old oil out.
If this has been done then it sounds like something has gone wrong inside the gearbox. Your next step would be to see if it can be repaired or reconditioned.
