97 HIJET possible clutch or transmission. Wont bite properly in 1st, struggling to get past 30 mph

Forum:

I bought this 97 HIJET a few of months ago for my new job. I had a couple of problems with overheating in the first month, at one point the fan belt cover melted. But she's been running fine since until about a week go when i'd been experiencing problems when going from a stop into first, the clutch doesn't bite properly and the van doesn't accelerate it just crawls, but you could get around this by shifting up into second. This went from being a nuisance to down right dangerous when it came to a busy roundabout. It was annoying but i just dealt with it until today when i was out in it, the same problem with the clutch but now into 2nd and 3rd makes the van jump around almost bunny hopping and its barely making it past 30 mph.
I haven't had much experience with HIJETS like i said i've only had it a few months, but its a good little van and actually quite fast when going down a hill. Does anyone else recognise any of these problems? Your help would be appreciated.

Just sounds like the clutch

Just sounds like the clutch disc friction has worn right down to the rivets and it's now too thin for the clucth cover to achieve proper clamp, so it's slipping.

Worth checking the clutch cable adjustment under bonnet to check it is not adjusted too tight and is preventing the clutch from releasing fully, but it sounds like it's has become too worn.

clutch slipping

Yea i'd go with that. Thanks for that ill check tomorrow, would it just be a case of replacing the clutch disc and checking the clutch cable, do you think?

Although the disc is probably

Although the disc is probably the only part that is worn/knackered, It's still worth buying a full clutch kit for the new cover and release bearing as well.

Can't see it costing much if you search the likes of Ebay or phone a few motor factors for a aftermarket clutch kit. Don't buy from Daihatsu, silly prices! The aftermarket ones are usually genuine Exedy factory clutches inside the boxes same as Daihatsu would supply, just in different suppliers branded boxes. Borg and Beck, Unipart, Sachs, Valeo, National, etc etc.

Vital the clutch cable is re-adjusted for the new clutch, there should be about 1-2cm of free play top of clutch pedal before you feel the resistance of the cable pulling the clutch arm.

Check the cable again after first few hundred miles as the new clutch beds in. You always want a bit of slack at top of the pedal to be sure the clutch is fully released when your foot is off the pedal.

Thanks
